Job summary

We are in the process of transforming the way we use data to drive improvement in the NHS. We want to hear from people who are passionate about optimising the accuracy of reports through continuous data quality and reporting methodology improvement.

Main duties of the job

We are looking to recruit an enthusiastic individual with experience in data extraction and analysis, as Senior Data Warehouse Analyst within our Data Warehousing Team. The post holder will work to relevant NHS Data Dictionary standards, NHS Financial Standards and local data definitions to meet the reporting needs of the Trust.

Main responsibilities:

  • Administration of the Data Warehouse to enable and fulfil the clinical and corporate reporting requirements of the Trust
  • Ensuring that data is managed and optimised within the Data Warehouse
  • Assisting with the completion of returns such as external benchmarking network submissions.

Job responsibilities

KEY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Design and implement Extraction, Transformation and Loading (ETL) procedures for intake of data from clinical and corporate systems, as well as ensure data is verified and quality is checked.

Optimize ETL procedures between the clinical and corporate systems and the Data Warehouse

Perform the design and extension of data marts, metadata, and data models

Support Application development as necessary in development of the in-house systems through configuration change requests and permissions management via an access control framework.

Be knowledgeable about a range of information query tools and languages

Support as required the Head of Data Architecture in investigating new methods of data manipulation and the most appropriate methods for ETL

Continuously maintain and enhance existing stored procedures, queries and reports

Develop clinical, operational and performance Data Warehouse reports

Analyses, interprets and resolves highly complex information problems where there is no precedent and where other leading opinions may conflict

Adapt, design and improve systems used to store and disseminate information

Troubleshoot errors and problems with databases and extracts

Ensure that documentation related to the Data Warehouse architecture, codes, ETL process and Data Warehouse reports is kept up-to-date and maintained in a version control system

Ensure that any changes in systems data sets are properly managed in the ETL process

Develop test scenarios to test any changes affecting the Data Warehouse

Ensure the systematic documentation of all test issues following the internal testing process and ensure that all issues are reported

Support where needed the resolving of errors in the output of reports generated from the Data Warehouse

Reporting

To develop the performance and information analysis function, producing new reports, enhancing the skills of internal clients so they can extract their own reports, and participating in change management processes.

To work with the Business Intelligence team in providing high quality, accurate, validated and timely reports to internal stakeholders.

Support reporting solutions that enable stakeholders to quickly identify risks, trends and concerns, in order to make decisions with confidence and speed.

Contribute to reporting solutions, which provide operational services with intelligence concerning performance measures.

To provide statistical analysis and profiles of trends within patient and Trust performance information, highlighting variances from the norm, and share this knowledge with Trust managers and others, to support decision making and performance improvement.

To proactively review specialty or procedure based activity within Divisions, drawing appropriate attention to areas that may have a current or future impact on the performance of the Trust.

Provide support for Trust staff on their use of new and existing information applications in the effective use of the reporting systems and appropriate use of information.

To undertake detailed, complex investigation into sensitive areas, taking the lead in undertaking projects from inception to completion

Interpret information, highlighting trends and / or inconsistencies and undertake ad hoc data analysis to investigate any issues highlighted

Support the team in providing training and support on dashboards developed by the team

Support service improvement through the provision of accurate information, using analytical techniques to assess data quality and cleanse large volumes of highly complex datasets.

To interpret data requirements from non-technical staff, into technical specifications for the activity reporting systems. Interpret highly complex database processes and standards in a simplified manner for non-technical staff.

Benchmarking

To lead on the development and provision of benchmarking activity data within the Trust.

To develop benchmarking data, systems and reporting processes in readiness for the NHSI Model Hospital for non-acute services.

To assist in the production of regular benchmarking information to the Trust Board, the Finance & Performance Committee and Operational Forums.

Service/People Management

To provide a data warehouse function to BI, IM&T, Corporate and Clinical Services

Provide line management, support and training for members of the Data Warehouse Team including performance management when this may be required.

To promote and participate in the process of sharing knowledge of reporting, database and querying techniques, data standards and changes between team members.

Develop a good understanding of the Clinical Directorates and monitor and support their data quality processes, working closely with managers and key players to ensure all activity is captured and reported correctly.

Provide guidance to operational staff to ensure adherence to local and national data standards, including data dictionary and PbR guidance.

Support the development of front line staff so all operational managers are able to perform their own basic data quality analysis for their departments activity

Decisions and judgements

Analyses, investigates and resolves activity queries and discrepancies from managers and teams, including the use of complex calculations.

Involves explanations for information trends and movements. This includes providing reports, advice and recommendations to budget managers to enable informed business decisions.

Attend and provides advice within meetings with clinical and non-clinical budget managers, based upon experience and expertise in Trust performance.

Ability to prioritise and plan own work, work in an organised fashion, and cope with the pressures of ensuring continual deadlines are met is essential.

Communication and relationships

Discuss routine and complex performance issues by telephone, e-mail, in writing and meeting with colleagues, managers and teams. Relaying technical information to non-finance persons therefore requiring highly developed and effective communication skills.

Discusses sometimes contentious and sensitive information that requires tact and persuasion.

To advise clinical and managerial staff of technical options available and make recommendations to address data quality and performance issues.
