Main duties of the job

The post holder will provide consultant psychiatric input into the specialist Children's eating disorders service within the Children & families Care group

The post holder will be an integral member of the team providing eating disorders assessment and treatment for young people with Eating disorders (including ARFID) across South Staffordshire. Our main base is Stafford however we also have a base in Burton and provide satellite clinics as required in other localities across South Staffordshire

The team is multi-disciplinary consisting of nurses, psychotherapists, dietitians and business support officer providing evidence based treatment including Family Therapy Anorexia Nervosa, CBT for Eating disorders and adolescent focused psychotherapy. The post holder will provide medical support to other team members assessing and treating medical and psychiatric complications. The post holder will be an integral member of the team and will be involved in all aspects of assessment and treatment including physical health monitoring and management of medical and psychiatric co- morbidity and in additional the development of the ARFID service model development

Job description

Job responsibilities

The post holder will take a lead role in the continuing development of the service, including the development of the ARFID offer.

  • The consultant will be responsible for the assessment of patients and their families, and the formulation of evidence based care plans which may or may not be deliverable by the current service.
  • The consultant will be responsible for ensuring the care of the most complex cases and appropriate liaison and referral to Tier 4 services when necessary.
  • Post holders will be Approved Clinicians under the Mental Health Act 1983 (amended 2007) and be willing to undertake training and assessments when appropriate. The post holder will also be required to maintain Section 12(2) approval under the Mental Health Act
  • Post holders will work to the current quality standards formulated by the Quality Governance Department within the Trust, and the local standards developed by the CAMHS Team, meeting performance demands and standards agreed between the Trust and Commissioners.
  • Recognising that the provision of care to children and adolescents who are patients of the service are often provided by other agencies, consultation and liaison is an integral part of the service provided. This may include attendance at case conferences called by Social Services when they involve current patients of the service / school visits for observation as well as liaison with and advice to tier 2/3 services. The post holder will also liaise and joint work with Adult Mental Health services to ensure smooth and timely transition of care into adulthood.
  • To provide second opinions for members of the multidisciplinary CAMHS Eating Disorders team as appropriate and take a clinical lead in the development of the CAMHS Eating Disorders service, including continuous improvement of service processes and pathways along with CAMHS Consultant colleagues
  • To support other staff through complex cases when necessary.
  • To liaise with schools, social services and other external agencies when it is in the interests of patients and families, and with their consent.
  • To work within the guidelines of Child Safeguarding arrangements for Staffordshire
  • To liaise with Tier 4 services when necessary, and attend CPA meetings for admitted patients.
  • To offer support and work with General Adult Psychiatry and Learning Disability Psychiatry colleagues in the provision of care to families when both parents and children are known to the service.
  • To work with paediatric colleagues when required and when appropriate to do so. This may include offering opinions regarding children admitted to the general paediatric ward.
  • To participate in business, governance and educational meetings when possible.
  • Tier 4 CAMHS interventions and specialist inpatient facilities are commissioned by NHSE from Regional Units based in Birmingham and Stoke on Trent.
  • Provision of appropriate and adequate Tier 4 services, including inpatient care, is a current priority of the Commissioners.

On call responsibility, there is a requirement for CAMHS psychiatrists to provide some cover for each other when needed between 9:00am and 5:00pm, Monday to Friday and to provide reciprocal cover to Consultant colleagues during annual leave and study leave. There is no out of hours on call commitment with this post.
