Job summary

The Professional Nurse Advocates (PNA) Lead is a new role within MPFT, fixed term or secondment for 12 months from appointment, and is an exciting opportunity for a nurse who is passionate about facilitating supervision & training and supporting the health and wellbeing of their nursing colleagues.

The PNA training programme was launched by NHS England in 2021 to enable nurses to use the Advocating and Educating for Quality Improvement (A-EQUIP) model of professional nursing leadership and clinical supervision. This post is suitable for a nurse who has completed the training course and possesses a PNA qualification. Your aim will be for every nurse in MPFT to have access to support from a PNA achieved by using a continuous quality improvement approach.

You will be a role model and ambassador to promote the wellbeing & empowerment of nurses and support them to deliver quality improvement initiatives in the workplace, inspiring a culture of improved patient safety & experience outcomes for service users and staff.

You will be a visible leader within MPFT & across the Midlands network of PNAs. You will provide assurance to the Trust's Nursing and Quality Directorate on the progress of the implementation of the PNA role and provide evidence on the evaluated benefits for staff and service users.

Main duties of the job

You will possess strong leadership skills to co-ordinate the Trust's PNAs, have oversight of nurses on the training course & ensure all nurses across the Trust have access to support from a PNA.

You will be knowledgeable about national healthcare governance policies and ensure these are reflected in local practice.

You must have experience report writing, using Excel, Powerpoint & other IT software. You must be able to demonstrate experience of conducting audits and participating in continuous quality improvements. You must ensure there is a robust process in place for responding to feedback from nurses, to ensure the voice of the nurses is heard and acted upon accordingly.

You must use effective communication strategies and influencing skills to achieve the desired outcomes and make appropriate referrals for advocacy, mediation or arbitration. You must have the knowledge and confidence to escalate any serious patient safety, safeguarding or personnel concerns through the appropriate channels.

You will represent the Trust across the Midlands PNA network and will work closely with the NHSE Regional PNA co-ordinator regarding the recruitment, training & graduation of PNAs.

You must have the ability to work autonomously, manage your own workload, be resilient and adaptable to the challenges facing the workforce.

Use your expert knowledge in nursing practice to support the implementation and monitoring of practice, ensuring that there are robust clinical governance assurance systems in place to monitor the delivery of supervision.

Provide support to Registered nurses in sharing of good practice learnt through the risk management processes with the aim of reducing the incidence of harm and litigation cases.

Chairing the community of practice and events for all PNAs across the trust.

Be involved in continuous monitoring and maintaining quality standards of clinical practice through a variety of ways for example clinical audit, working clinically with nurses for those who require additional support and development.

Act as a role model at all times and promote a high standard of safe and effective care which is based upon best evidence.

Meet with nurses in their designated area and/or caseload on either an appointment or ad hoc basis.

Use effective communication strategies and influencing skills to achieve desired outcomes and make appropriate referrals for advocacy, mediation or arbitration.

Communicate and collaborate effectively with clinical educators in the Trust, to provide high quality, patient centred, research-based education that ensures the delivery of high quality care for patients delivered by staff who have the required education and development to meet the patient needs in accordance with individual scope of professional practice, guidelines and code of conduct and standards as define by UK regulator.

Lead on the utilisation of agreed metrics to demonstrate on going added value of the role of Professional Nurse Advocate (PNA) and monitoring outcomes for staff and patients e.g. reduction in complaints, improved satisfaction surveys, reduction in sickness absence for registered Nurses as well as improved retention.

Identify, collate, analyse and interpret quantitative and qualitative data to inform the development of reports regarding the process, impact and outcome of the PNA role and the A-EQUIP model. Taking a lead role to ensure monthly reporting to Associate Chief Nurse on matters relating to PNA activity.

To lead the delivery of restorative clinical supervision to staff when requested and need is identified.

Demonstrate understanding of the role of the Professional Nurse Advocate within the context of national governance policies and procedures.

Ensure that you maintain your own knowledge and clinical skills by all appropriate means.

To develop links with Business team in Nursing to support the development of PNA resources across the trust working closely with SOOTHE and FTSU resources.

Mentor and Supervise Trainee PNAs to complete required competency.

Support and attend external meetings on PNA programme representing the Trust.

To actively promote research awareness and contribute to the research agenda, working closely with the Trust research and innovation department.
