Job summary

An exciting opportunity has arisen at Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust for two passionate and enthusiastic band 7 Midwives, to join the team as Specialist Health Equity Midwives.

In Leeds we provide maternity care to around 10,000 women a year currently across two hospitals sites and within the community. Leeds has an ethnically diverse and socio-economically varied maternity population. We are looking for two midwives with a passion for improving equity in maternity services and an energy for improving population health. You need to be dedicated and possess excellent interpersonal skills and team work. You will be part of a busy multi-disciplinary team who are dedicated to providing individualised care to the woman and families that access our service. The successful candidates will have a remit to support the Consultant Midwife for Health Equity to assess, review and identify ways of reducing health inequalities within the local maternity population. They will work across the maternity service, networking and communicating with a range of stakeholders to support national, regional and local agenda to improve equity of care in maternity services for those populations in greatest need of targeted intervention and support. They will also collaborate directly with the people who use our maternity services to improve patient experience for marginalised groups, which is intrinsically linked to safe care and successful engagement from our communities.

Main duties of the job

The postholder will have a remit to work alongside the consultant midwife on health equity agenda to identify and work to engage (both directly and through other stakeholders, community connectors so on) women and birthing people and their families who are marginalized and/or experiencing/at risk of health inequalities.

In recognition of the well-evidenced disparities in outcomes for these groups, the postholder will work to identify improvement strategies in response to the UK MBRRACE reports highlighting increased maternal mortality for Black, Asian and Minority ethnic (BAME) childbearing women and birthing people, those living in poverty or complex social circumstances, and others with protected characteristics.

The postholder will be required to establish effective and trusted channels of communication with childbearing women, pregnant people and their families, and ensure all members of the multidisciplinary team are aware of the services and pathways being developed and offered. This will result in our patient experience being more personalised and improving in accordance with the Equity and Equality Guidance for Local Maternity and Neonatal Services.

Local data and service user feedback will be used to support care quality improvement for childbearing women and pregnant people experiencing health inequalities to ensure safety, well-being and positive birth experiences.
