An exciting opportunity has arisen to join our new cohort of Midwifery Degree Apprenticeships (MDA) within the Womens CSU. We are looking for someone who is passionate about delivering high quality, evidence-based women-centred care.

This is an apprenticeship where you will have the opportunity to earn while you learn throughout the duration of the programme.

You will be already employed as a Maternity Support Worker at LTHT and will transfer to a Maternity Degree Apprenticeship role on a fixed term contract for 40 months at Leeds Teaching Hospitals (LTHT). Upon successful completion of your apprenticeship and once you have your NMC pin you will be employed as a band 5 Registered Midwife.

Main duties of the job

This is a developmental role. The apprentice will work towards progression into the post of Midwife through successful completion of the Degree programme which includes the attainment of a BSc Midwifery Degree with honours.

They will develop and maintain knowledge, skills and behaviours related to the role of the Midwife within the service and through completion of the Midwifery Degree Apprenticeship programme which includes working in care settings and the delivery of evidence-based women-centred care.

The training programme emphasises the role of the Midwife in providing high quality evidence based care to women and their families and develop the ways in which they can ensure delivery of holistic care. Holistic care is a whole-person approach which considers, and equally values, physical, psychological, social, economic, spiritual and other factors while planning and delivering care.

The Midwifery Degree Apprenticeship course is a forty month education programme, working to become a Registered Midwife with a BSc Hons degree in Midwifery. The course combines work-based and academic learning between LTHT and an approved Higher Education Institute (HEI).

ENTRY CRITERIA -

You will be already employed as a Maternity Support Worker at LTHT and already achieved one of the following -

-BBC at A Level including a Biological Science but excluding General Studies. If you are studying a Science A Level, the endorsement for practical work is essential and a requirement for entry to our degree courses.

-112 UCAS tariff points from a maximum of three Level 3 qualifications including an A level Biological Science at a minimum grade B and excluding General Studies. The endorsement for practical work is essential and a requirement for entry to our degree courses. Alternatively, a Distinction in BTEC Subsidiary Diploma/Level 3 National Extended Certificate in Health and Social Care is acceptable. Please note that the UCAS points are used as a frame of reference and that applications will not be submitted through UCAS.

-DMM in BTEC Level 3 Extended Diploma in Health and Social Care (with a minimum of 4 units in Biological Sciences).

-Access to Higher Education Diploma with 45 level 3 credits, at least 15 at Distinction and 30 credits at Merit. The course must contain 18 credits in a Biological Science.

-NCFE CACHE Technical Level 3 Extended Diploma in Health and Social Care at Grade B.

You must also have GCSE English Language or Literature and Maths at grade 4 or above, or grade C or above if awarded under the previous GCSE grading scheme and these need to be evidenced prior to commencing on the programme. Alternatively, Level 2 Functional Skills in Maths and English will be accepted.

As an Apprentice Midwife you will be based - as a paid employee - within LTHT. Whilst you will be allocated to one specific area, you will experience working across both internal and external placements to gain an appreciation of the different areas of local maternity services and meet the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) requirements for entry to the NMC register, which will provide you with Registered Midwife status.

You will be required to achieve the education and practice standards as set out by the NMC, HEI and the Institute of Apprenticeships and undertake an end point assessment, as well as completion of the forty month degree programme.

During the degree programme you will develop skills and knowledge that will allow you to work in todays dynamic and changing healthcare environment. You will be required to commit to self-directed study and successfully complete the programme within the contract period.

PRINCIPAL DUTIES & AREAS OF RESPONSIBILITY

As part of the apprenticeship you will be required to:

Deliver high quality, evidence-based compassionate care under the direction and supervision of a Registered Midwife.

Successfully complete and pass the academic and practice elements of the programme as specified by the Leeds Teaching Hospital Trust (LTHT), HEI and Institute of Apprenticeship standards. According to these standards you will be required to complete 2,300 placement hours equally divided between theory and practice as off the job training. You will also be required to complete an apprentice portfolio that demonstrates learning and skills and complete an end point assessment.

Successfully complete the competencies related to NMC standards as specified by the Trust and the University.

Have sound attitudes and behaviours compatible with NHS Values and LTHT values as set out in The Leeds Way.

Work as part of a designated clinical care team delivering care that focuses on the direct needs of the women as a rostered member of staff as on the job training.

Work with an NMC approved mentor, taking responsibility for developing your own midwifery competence while on placements, and attending academic study; maintaining evidence of your learning.

Adhere to the policies and procedures required as an employee of LTHT.

Work within the competency boundaries as set at each stage of the programme and as determined by the Nursing and Midwifery standards for registered midwifery preparation, regardless of previous healthcare experience.

Demonstrate a flexible and dynamic attitude, both to your paid work and academic studies.
