Job summary

An exciting opportunity has arisen for an experienced nurse in Plastic Surgery. We are looking to appoint a Band 6 Sister/Charge Nurse for the Plastic Surgery ward L22 which looks after both acute and elective patients who require surgical intervention

We are looking for a senior nurse who is forward thinking, highly motivated and able to demonstrate experience in a variety of settings.

This post will support the Band 7 Ward Manager to lead, and to further enhance the team of nurses within the plastic surgery ward. This ward is a busy, complex inpatient ward. Key aspects of the role are focusing on the patient experience and patient safety, providing assurance that standards are met for every patient, every time and ensure the development of the service.

Main duties of the job

This is a demanding and challenging role and we are looking for an individual who is committed to providing an excellent service, has a progressive outlook and can evidence strong leadership skills. The post holder will need to demonstrate aptitude and willingness to embrace and drive forward change as part of the senior nursing team.

The successful candidate will have strong communication, organisational and team working skills and have experience of managing nursing teams and successfully implementing change. Considerable experience at Band 5 or above, a teaching qualification (or working towards) and IT skills, and evidence of post registration development are essential. They will be involved in close working with the rest of the multi-disciplinary team to deliver patient centred care and will be committed to improving the patient experience through new ways of working.

Job responsibilities

JOB PURPOSE

The jobholder will play an essential role assisting the Senior Sister/Charge Nurse with the continuing responsibility for the effective and efficient management of the department. They will contribute to the provision of professional, clinical, managerial leadership and supervision for the nursing team.

The jobholder is responsible for helping to develop and maintain a ward or departments philosophy that has the patient at the centre of compassionate safe and quality care delivery. By assisting with managing the administrative and financial aspects of the ward, the jobholder will support the cost effective use of resources.

As an experienced nurse the jobholder will co-ordinate activities on the ward/dept ensuring effective communication is maintained at all times, providing support to qualified and unqualified nurses within the ward/dept. He/she will play a key role in the assessment of patient care needs and the development, implementation and evaluation of programmes of care.

The jobholder will act as a role model, promoting quality evidence-based practice, developing the nursing team and ensuring effective management of the ward/department in the absence of the Senior Sister/Charge Nurse.

PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND AREAS OF RESPONSIBILITY

Clinical

Maintain a high standard of patient focused care in accordance with Leeds Teaching Hospitals Trust guidelines and policies

Act as a role model for the development of clinical skills and knowledge within the ward team

Maintain a safe working environment

Support the Senior Sister/Charge Nurse in setting and monitoring standards and seek to continuously improve standards and the quality of patient care, including those standards defined in the National Benchmarks for Essential Care

Provide assessment, planning, implementation and evaluation of nursing care for patients, ensuring written records are kept

Acts in accordance with the Nursing and Midwifery code of conduct

In conjunction with the Senior Sister/Charge Nurse ensure management of clinical services and efficient deployment of staff according to service needs.

Managerial

Working with Senior Sister/Charge Nurse provide leadership to the clinical team, developing new rotas/ways of working

Support Senior Sister/Charge Nurse in staff rostering, ensuring adequate skill mix

In conjunction with Senior Sister/Charge Nurse closely monitor bank and agency usage

Support Senior Sister/Charge Nurse in investigating and responding to accidents, complaints, untoward incidents and other significant events

Work with Matron/Senior Sister/Charge Nurse to promote the development of nurses undertaking the CNO Ten Key Roles as considered appropriate
