Ward Environment Support Worker

Job summary

To work as a member of the clinical ward team carrying out the cleaning and the movement of patients, specimens & goods/consumables/drugs between wards and departments. To provide a range of direct or indirect supervised non-clinical support to the professional teams within designated clinical areas.The role will be supportive in keeping the hospital environment, safe, clean and tidy. The provision of a high-quality support service, responding to patient bed discharge/equipment cleaning and or/ urgent patient equipment/specimen/blood transportation.The job holder will work within designated clinical areas providing support to the multi-disciplinary teams. Duties will include answering phones, cleaning equipment, setting up equipment under supervision, ordering maintaining stock levels and any other general clinical duties required.The job holder will meet, and greet patients, family or carers and provide family and carer support where asked to do so. The job holder will be a central point of communication between the department and medical physics to ensure equipment is returned, and repaired, and or serviced in a timely manner

Main duties of the job

WESS role includes cleaning shared patient equipment, ward area cleaning including staff room/ MDT office,supporting with bed space cleaning for admissions/transfers/ bed swaps, supporting patient meal service, completing stock checks and replenishment.Without the WESS support of cleaning patient shared equipment there is a risk of increase in HCAIs due to decreased shared equipment cleaning. Ward J34 recently had 3 HCAI, though J34 green for environment level metrics infection risk for the financial year to date. Without the WESS role there will be less frequent deep cleaning of shared equipment and areas or this will be moved to a nursing team role which will take from nursing team capacity.WESS helps to support with patient flow with assisting with bed space cleaning, this is particularly beneficial during breakfast and lunch periods as the housekeeping team are unable to complete them which causes a delay in patient flow. This is also vital during patient bed swaps to accommodate source isolation to prevent delayed isolation.The nutrition mission model of meal service requires an increased input from nursing staff which is vital to ensure that patients needs are met. The WESS role ensures that there is a designated soup and meal runner at lunchtime to allow nursing staff to prioritise preparing and supporting patients with feeding.WESS supports with transporting patients belongings/equipment between wards as required which reducedPALS due to lost property.
