About us
The Leeds and Wakefield Breast Screening service currently provides breast cancer screening by mammography once every 3 years for a catchment population of approximately 50,000 women between the ages of 50 and 70 who are resident in Leeds and Wakefield areas. The service is part of the National Breast Screening programme, which utilises a complex computerised system to manage the screening programme. The service utilises mobile screening units to cover the catchment area, and static units at Trinity Centre in Wakefield, St Jamess University Hospital, Seacroft Hospital and Wharfedale Hospital. The further assessment of screen detected abnormalities is performed in the Breast Assessment Clinic in Seacroft Hospital. Approximately 50 appointments for assessments are sent out each week. Each woman who attends receives a result letter, and her GP receives a report on the outcome of screening.
