Job summary

Nuclear Medicine are looking for a highly motivated, enthusiastic member of staff to join our team. The Nuclear Medicine departments operate 6 gamma cameras across St James Hospital and Leeds General Infirmary, scanning outpatients, inpatients and paediatrics. This busy department requires an individual with excellent communication skills to work as part of our clinical and administrative team. The applicant should have patient care and accomplished computer skills, a caring and friendly demeanour, and a keen eye for detail. The post is both challenging and rewarding and is most suited to an individual who can prioritise their workload, respond quickly to changing situations and work effectively in a busy environment. An understanding of the basics of the procedures undertaken in Nuclear Medicine and PET CT imaging would be advantageous to answer patient enquires effectively and efficiently. This is a rotational, full time (37.5 hours a week) position so will involve working at both St James and Leeds General Infirmary.

Main duties of the job

This varied role will involve a number of different clinical and clerical duties. These include;

Cannulating patients intravenously prior to imaging and assisting patients to complete their pre- examination safety sheets.

Assisting staff with interventional procedures such as injections and adhering to aseptic techniques.

Positioning patients for examinations.

General cleaning, maintenance and care of equipment (including basic fault finding), trouble shooting and reporting of faults.

Stock control.

Clerical duties and data input onto the Radiology Information System (RIS).

Job responsibilities

Escort patients in and out of the examination rooms.

Assist patients on and off the examination table and where necessary, use various mobilisation devices in line with Moving and Handling training.

Communicate effectively and empathetically with patients and their carers.

Assist with moving and handling of those patients who are immobile in a manner that is safe for all concerned and following manual handling guidelines.

Assist and aid registered practitioners or medical staff in the delivery of minimally invasive procedures.

To prepare sterile equipment in preparation of any interventional procedures.

Prepare drugs for intravenous administration following appropriate training and in line with department medicine management guidelines under supervision.

To maintain high standards of hygiene and cleanliness for patient needs, the equipment and working environment.

Ensure safe handling of medicines at all times.

Undertake venous cannulation, in line with the modality specific scheme of work.

To physically position the patient for a range of routine examinations, to ensure that image quality, patient comfort and patient safety are maintained at all times whilst taking into account patient limitations. To defer to the radiographer for complex examinations requiring adaptation of standard technique.

To include registering the patient, updating patient records, bookings, extraction of work lists and all other associated RIS activities.

To enter accurate patient and examination data into Radiology Information System.

Monitor stock, operate stock control and order medical equipment, accessories, consumables, linen and pharmacy and order as required.

Deal with telephone messages in an efficient manner. Report any adverse incidents to the appropriate line manager in line with the Trust and radiology risk management system.

Basic operation of the specialised equipment following appropriate training.

Wear personal protective equipment when required.

Care for, check and maintain high standards of cleanliness of clinical equipment to minimise spread of infection.

Ensure safe disposal of linen and clinical waste from the department.
