Job summary

An exciting opportunity has arisen to work within the busy Breast Service at Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust which includes both screening and symptomatic elements. The screening department is based at Seacroft Hospital Leeds, the symptomatic service is based at St.James's Hospital Leeds. Breast imaging is a challenging and interesting branch of radiography, first rate practical imaging and communication skills are important, together with a commitment and focus towards customer care. We are seeking to recruit versatile, well-motivated and enthusiastic radiographers to join our multi-disciplinary breast team. Mammography qualifications are welcome but not essential as postgraduate training is available. As the mobile mammography units for breast screening are sited in a variety of locations around Leeds, Wakefield and Pontefract there is an expectation that applicants will be able to access their own or suitable transport to work at the different sites. The breast services team is committed to putting the patient first and we are looking for an individual with a desire and drive to deliver a high quality of care. Main duties of the job

The successful applicant will undertake all the professional and technical requirements of the post as a State Registered qualified radiographer with the Health Professions Council (HPC), while working as an autonomous practitioner within Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust Radiology CSU. To perform high quality mammograms, within a screening and clinic environment in line with national standards. They will be involved with patients attending clinic who have been recalled for assessment from the screening service or those attending the symptomatic 2WW clinics. In the clinic setting they will be involved with interventional procedures which includes assisting with biopsies, localisation of magseeds for theatre and contrast examinations. The candidate will also attend multidisciplinary team meetings to work alongside the Radiologist and coordinate patients requiring additional procedures or follow-up imaging. To work as a clinical specialist as part of a multi-disciplinary team providing high standards of patient care for patients from diverse backgrounds who may have complex physical/psychological conditions, whilst following policies and procedures as specified by the Radiology Management Team. The post-holder also undertakes the supervision and specialist clinical training of radiographers, undergraduate students and other staff as appropriate. They will have a commitment to their own personal development and research.

The successful candidate should hold BSc (or equivalent) in Diagnostic Radiography and be state registered with The Health & Care Professions Council (HCPC). They should have a knowledge and understanding of breast services with a focus on up-and-coming developments within this field. They should be a motivated team worker and have a high awareness and understanding of the needs of the patient, due to the sensitive nature of this role.

PRINCIPAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

Clinical Responsibilities

To assess clinical authorisation of radiology referrals in line with the National Regulations, Ionising Radiation (Medical Exposure) Regulations (IR(ME)R), 2024 and local protocols.

To have an awareness and understand all policies and procedures trust wide and those specific to radiology/breast, and to have an excellent understanding of protocols within breast services.

Act within their own scope of practice, as defined by IRMER 2024 regulations

To be aware of and comply with all standards of conduct, dress codes and patients care that relates to radiography and act within the approved guidelines of the Trust.

Comply with infection prevention and control, health and safety regulations, patient confidentiality and equality & diversity.

Contribute to the development and delivery of an effective and responsive breast service.

Be committed to undertaking all training requirements of the post.

Once appropriately trained to work without supervision, taking legal responsibility and accountability for all aspects of your own work. With the ability to work independently or as part of a team.

Undertake practical training and clinical supervision of radiographers, student radiographers, assistant practitioners and radiographer helpers/assistants as appropriate, according to department protocols and schemes of work.

Maintain high level of technical and theoretical skills though personal Continual Professional Development (CPD), in accordance with the requirements of the HPC.

Demonstrate reflective practice based on knowledge and skills so as to formulate and deliver diagnostic imaging based on sound knowledge of evidence-based practice and imaging options using clinical assessment, reasoning and skills and knowledge of other techniques.

To liaise with referral source where clarification is required regarding selection of the most clinically appropriate imaging examination.

To act as a point of advice for imaging referrers.

To act as a point of reference for patient enquiries regarding their referral, for all issues relating to hospital attendance for example; radiation protection issues, Patient Advice and Liaison Service (PALS), Interpretation services and freedom of information services.

To act as a patient advocate in radiation protection issues.

To ensure patients have given informed consent prior to radiographic examinations and have the knowledge to work within a legal framework with patients who lack capacity to consent to treatment.

To understand and be able to complete all equipment QA requirements, and act on any discrepancies.

Applying a high level of manual dexterity in acquiring accurate, high quality diagnostic images, whilst accommodating a full range of patient presentations and adapting standard technique when necessary.

To undertake the comprehensive assessment and appropriate examination of patients including those who present with multiple pathologies/conditions. These patients require the use of advanced investigative and analytical skills to select and utilise the most appropriate approach to their imaging.

The ability to work in a stressful environment imparting contentious/difficult and sensitive information on a daily basis.

The ability to deal effectively with emotional and/or aggressive patients and/or carers on a daily basis. This will necessitate the use of effective communication skills e.g. to motivate and reassure

To use a range of verbal and non-verbal communication tools to communicate effectively with patients about their treatment and examination. This will include patients who have difficulties in understanding or communicating

To operate advanced software on specialist Radiological equipment, requiring excellent hand-eye co-ordination and manual dexterity.
