This is an exciting time to join one of the largest Pathology departments in the country. We have just gone live in our new £30m Pathology building (on the St. Jamess University Hospital site) and new Acute Hospital Laboratory (on the Leeds General Infirmary site).

The Department of Blood Sciences is seeking to recruit a Trainee Biomedical Scientist to join our highly skilled workforce. The candidate should be passionate about completing the IBMS registration portfolio in Clinical Biochemistry and becoming a fully qualified Biomedical Scientist. The candidate should also we willing to support and improve the service we deliver to our patients.

Main duties of the job

The successful candidate will work within a large hub laboratory, serving both Leeds Teaching Hospitals and the wider community. This includes the regional Oncology centre and the Leeds Children's Hospital, which is a unique opportunity for the successful candidate to gain experience in wide range of biochemistry assays. The successful candidate will be involved in the exciting transition within our new, purpose-built hub laboratory at St. Jamess University Hospital.

Candidates must possess an IBMS accredited BSc in Biomedical Sciences (or equivalent) and ideally will have already made progress with the IBMS Registration Portfolio. Laboratory Biochemistry experience would also be advantageous.

This is a full-time role which will include evening, night and weekend working across both Leeds sites.

As a training role, continuation of employment is subject to HCPC registration. This post is advertised as a 12-month secondment during which period the individual must obtain HCPC registration via completion of the IBMS registration portfolio. If successful in obtaining registration status, the post will be made permanent. Already qualified HCPC registered candidates need not apply and instead apply for a Biomedical Scientist role.

About us

Our Pathology services operate across two large university teaching hospitals in the Leeds Metropolitan area with a population of around 2.3 million and provide services both regionally and nationally. In addition to the new laboratory projects, we are also working to deploy a new Managed Pathology Service Contract. Construction on the new Leeds Children's Hospital is also planned for the future, which will include all in-patient maternity and specialist neonatal services to become the largest single site maternity centre in the UK.

The successful candidate will be well supported by the wider scientific and clinical teams. The Blood Sciences Department is accredited to ISO15189 and by the IBMS as a training laboratory in both Clinical Biochemistry and Haematology.
