Job summary

We are seeking an enthusiastic individual to join the Cellular Pathology Department as a full time, trainee Biomedical Scientist.

Applications are invited from Individuals working towards attaining registered status as a Biomedical Scientist with the HCPC within the next 12 months. Once registered with the HCPC the candidate will progress to the band 5 pay scale.

Eligible individuals will have completed/nearing completion of an accredited degree and have the IBMS Certificate of Competence or are nearing completion of the registration portfolio. Applications may also be considered from candidates who will need top up modules to achieve an IBMS accredited degree.

The post is suitable for someone who is highly motivated, enthusiastic and a good team worker. Experience in Cellular Pathology techniques is advantageous.

The department benefits from advanced technologies such as Xpress processing and digital scanning, and is the first to introduce fully automated sectioning to the UK.

The department is well equipped, fully computerised, and is accredited by the IBMS as a training laboratory.

Main duties of the job

The post holder will be a member of the departmental team and assist in the delivery of a quality driven, cost effective, patient focused service consistent with LTHT Pathology objectives. To provide that service in a manner commensurate with the profession.

The post holders main role is to carry out the examination of pathological samples using various technologies, under supervision. As a Trainee Biomedical Scientist, you will work towards becoming a HCPC (Health Care Professions Council) registered practitioner (Biomedical Scientist).

Working in different sections of the Cellular Pathology department you will gain the knowledge and skills necessary to contribute towards the provision of an accurate and timely service for patients. Working unsupervised within scope as practice as an unregistered member of staff you will be expected to apply professional judgements and specialist skills to technically complex and sometimes difficult situations, and to work, often under pressure, either independently or as part of the team.

You will be required to communicate information, often related to patient management and care to colleagues, healthcare staff and other organisations.

Although based at St James University Hospital you may be required to rotate to other sites and sections within LTHT, and once competent you will be required to take part in the departmental on call rota.

About us

The department provides Histopathology, Non Gynae Cytology, Andrology, Muscle, Nerve, Immunohistochemistry, Molecular, and Mortuary services for LTHT and surrounding primary care centres.

We are a well equipped and innovative department being the first laboratory in the UK digitally scanning 100% of surgical slides, also introducing the UK's first automated tissue sectioners. We process circa 58,000 surgical cases, 3000 andrology cases, 2,000 autopsy cases and 6000 non-gynaecological cytology cases per annum. We are a continually improving department, striving for high quality staff and processes. As a training hospital we serve to expand the knowledge and skills of all staff. The department has a Transformation Lead to support with development of the service.

SPECIAL WORKING CONDITIONS

As the job holder you will be required to work in a clinical laboratory environment. As such you will work under controlled conditions where chemical and biohazardous materials are handled. For your own protection you will be required to wear appropriate personal protective equipment and for this you will receive training. Frequent periods of light and occasional periods of moderate physical activity related to stores management may be expected. The service is delivered from a number of different sites and you may be required, subject to consultation, to travel between sites.

i)PHYSICAL EFFORT:

This job requires a high degree of dexterity and precision when manipulating small tools such as pipettes, handling very small volumes of clinical material or when preparing microscope slides for examination. In order to achieve the required turn around times, for instance when working as a team member in an acute laboratory area, rapid results are required. This work is unpredictable and will require the job holder to plan, prioritise and analyse these samples, working with both speed and accuracy.

Many tasks are repetitive and may involve the job holder standing at equipment or sitting at the laboratory bench for extended periods.

Regular requirement to sit at PC and regular requirement for post holder to be mobile for collection & delivery of samples.

This job requires the holder to participate in stock control, including the movement of goods from the point of delivery to the point of storage. This will require movement of light and moderate loads up to 15kg . There is the occasional requirement to move loads of 20kg with the aid of a trolley.

It is anticipated there will be the occasional requirement to exert moderate physical effort for several short periods in a shift.

ii)MENTAL EFFORT:

The day to day repertoire of this job is diverse and the job holder can expect to be asked by supervisory staff to change tasks at short notice. In order to minimise errors concentration is required on a daily basis when processing specimens. It is expected there will be the occasional requirement for prolonged concentration.

The job holder is expected to operate complex laboratory equipment. This task requires concentration so that personal safety is maintained, and equipment is not damaged.

There is no requirement for the job holder to drive a vehicle

iii)EMOTIONAL EFFORT:

In normal circumstances there is little patient contact by the job holder and exposure to emotional circumstances is limited. However, subject to the requirements of the speciality some patient contact may occur such as in the collection of capillary blood samples from children. It is anticipated that the postholder will only have occasional exposure to distressing or emotional circumstances.

iv) WORKING CONDITIONS:

The post holder will work generally in a laboratory environment and may be required to sit or stand at the bench for prolonged periods. It is expected that the role will involve light to moderate physical effort.
