Job summary

We are seeking an enthusiastic, highly motivated individual to join the Cellular Pathology Department as a permanent, full time Healthcare Science Practitioner in our Andrology section.

Applications are invited from candidates who have a degree in an appropriate Biological science or equivalent, and have had previous work based laboratory experience of at least 2 years, preferably in a laboratory that performs Diagnostic semen analysis and Post vasectomy semen analysis.

Individuals must have knowledge and experience performing Andrology techniques in particular with reference to the WHO 2021 guidelines for examination and processing of human semen.

Candidates must be willing and able to undertake completion of the ARCS certificate in diagnostic semen analysis/equivalent (if not already in possession of).

Although primarily based at Seacroft Hospital you may be required to rotate to other sites and sections within LTHT.

The department is well equipped, fully computerised, UKAS accredited and is also accredited by the IBMS as a training laboratory.

Main duties of the job

As a Healthcare Science Practitioner in Andrology, the post holder will be a member of the departmental team and assist in the delivery of a quality driven, cost effective, patient focused service consistent with LTHT Pathology objectives. To provide that service in a manner commensurate with the profession.

To carry out the examination of pathological samples using various technologies and to report or present the results as appropriate.

The main duties of this role

Assist in the maintenance of the Andrology service, processing of semen samples, perform diagnostic semen analysis (Infertility testing) and post vasectomy semen analysis (PVSA).

Data entry, entering patient details and results as appropriate

Authorisation of reports

Involvement in quality assurance, audit and mentoring

To undertake routine and more complex clinical technical investigations.

To communicate complex and sensitive information to colleagues, patients and other healthcare staff

The post will require supervisory skills when directing the activities of more junior staff.

Work independently in accordance with relevant policies, protocols and procedures.

About us

The department provides Histopathology, Andrology, Immunohistochemistry, Muscle, Molecular, Non Gynae Cytology and mortuary services for Leeds Teaching Hospitals Trust and surrounding primary care centres. We are a well equipped and innovative department being the first laboratory in the UK digitally scanning 100% of surgical slides, also introducing the UK's first automated tissue sectioners. We process circa 60,000 surgical cases, 3000 andrology cases, 2,000 autopsy cases and 6000 non-gynaecological cytology cases per annum. We are a continually improving department, striving for high quality staff and processes. As a training hospital we serve to expand the knowledge and skills of all staff. There are plenty of opportunities to become involved, and further development is encouraged. We have UKAS accreditation to ISO15189 standards. MAIN DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES

Work in close collaboration with Biomedical Scientist and the Team Lead Biomedical Scientist

Participate in rotas and work allocation to ensure that there is sufficient Technical staff for the Service.

Maintain computerised records of analyses undertaken and the results of investigations using the laboratory database.

Access appropriate on-line software and databases to facilitate data analysis.

Work safely with toxic substances hazardous to health and help promote safe working practices within the Service.

Maintain an accurate record of all work undertaken and preserve the confidentiality of the patient and any associated clinical information and potentially sensitive results of semen analysis.

Access appropriate software and databases to facilitate data analysis.

Compile routine normal and abnormal patient reports

Check and authorise patient reports once deemed competent.

Undertake rotation into other areas of Service as required.

Maintain service and oversee the use of highly specialised laboratory equipment used in diagnostic testing.

Provide detailed technical advice on the correct and appropriate use of laboratory equipment.

Liaise with representatives from suppliers of laboratory equipment and reagents.

Plan and undertake troubleshooting to rectify technical problems with equipment or processes in collaboration with a Senior Practitioner.

Assist in research and development activities.

Participate in the training and supervision of junior staff members.

Provide scientific and technical advice to other healthcare science colleagues.

Participate in audit and IQC and EQA activity in collaboration with the Quality Manager.

Write and review Standard Operating Procedures as directed by the Quality Manager.

Take part in Continuing Professional Development activities (e.g. attending directorate seminars, journal clubs, attending local/national meetings and conferences, periodic literature reviews and hospital training sessions) to acquire new knowledge and skills for service and personal development.

In order to achieve the required turnaround times, for instance when working as a team member in an acute laboratory area, rapid results are required. This work is unpredictable and will require the job holder to plan, prioritise and analyse these samples, working with both speed and accuracy.

These tasks are repetitive and may involve the job holder standing at equipment or sitting at the laboratory bench for extended periods.

This job may require the holder to participate in stock control, including movement of goods from the point of delivery to the point of storage. This will require occasional movement of light and moderate loads up to 15kg.

There is normally no requirement to lift people.

ii) MENTAL EFFORT:

As a general requirement of this job, the holder will be expected to carry out a number of clinical technical investigations where concentration is required. These periods of concentration will be daily, for instance when performing microscopy techniques or processing clinical samples.

The job holder is expected to operate highly complex laboratory equipment. This task requires concentration so that positive patient identification and personal safety are maintained and equipment is not damaged.

There is no requirement for the job holder to drive a vehicle

iii) EMOTIONAL EFFORT:

In certain circumstances the nature of this work can be distressing and emotional when dealing with patients and their relatives.

Occasional exposure to verbally aggressive patients

The working environment in a clinical laboratory is strictly controlled and under normal circumstances these hazards are contained.
