Job summary

The Department of Blood Sciences is seeking to expand its senior management team in order to deliver excellent, high-quality integrated care to our patients in keeping with the Trusts wider vision. This is an exciting time to join one of the largest Pathology departments in the country, in advance of moving to our new £30m Pathology building on the St. Jamess University Hospital site and the new acute hospital laboratory on the Leeds General Infirmary site.

The successful candidate will provide operational leadership for the Haematology service in conjunction with the other Service Lead(s). Reporting to the Service Manager, they will work closely with other key scientific and clinical staff to deliver a 24/7 Blood Sciences service across both the Leeds General Infirmary and St. James's University Hospital sites. They will also lead on service development activity, evolving our processes through the adoption of new services, equipment and technologies to meet the requirement of our current and future users.

This role is a full time 12 month fixed term opportunity (a secondment may also be considered if this was supported by a current employer).

Main duties of the job

You will be registered with the HCPC, have gained an MSc (or FIBMS equivalent) and have significant experience as a Biomedical Scientist in Haematology, working at a senior level for at least five years. A management or leadership qualification is highly desirable, as is significant experience in coordinating quality management systems, programme management and/or leading large teams. As Service Lead you will be required to lead on the transformation of our services as part of the wider Trust strategy, as part of the BtLW programme and as part of the WYATT network.

Key responsibilities include:

Operational responsibility for a large multi-site Haematology department. Line management of a large multi-disciplinary team of Biomedical Scientists and other scientific and admin staff.

Lead on Governance and training related activity, accreditation and regulatory requirements.

Management of a delegated budget for the Blood Sciences service(s) and represent the department as an authorised signatory for amounts governed by the Trusts standing financial instructions.

A large part of this role will be contributing to service development through active participation and leadership in a range of on-going projects as part of the BtLW programme and as part of the WYATT network of clinical laboratories.

About us

Our Pathology services operate across two large university teaching hospitals in the Leeds Metropolitan area with a population of around 2.3 million and provide services both regionally and nationally. This includes the regional Oncology centre and the Leeds Children's Hospital. Construction on the new Leeds Children's Hospital is also about to start, which will include all in-patient maternity and specialist neonatal services to become the largest single site maternity centre in the UK. The Department of Blood Sciences has a friendly and very engaged multi-disciplinary senior team and a well-developed quality management system. The successful candidate will be well supported by the wider scientific and clinical teams. The Blood Sciences Department is accredited to ISO15189 and by the IBMS as a training laboratory in both Clinical Biochemistry and Haematology.
