Job summary

An exciting new opportunity has arisen for a Genomic Associate (GA) to join the Yorkshire Regional Genetics Service (YRGS), specifically to promote culturally competent genetics services for underserved groups, particularly where close relative partnerships/marriages are more common, and will become an expert in this area. This is a new role which we expect to develop over time, and is part of a National Strategy, funded by NHS England, to enhance services for families in high need areas and will link closely with equivalent posts in other areas of high need nationally.

Main duties of the job

The GA will help to deliver general and prenatal genetic pathways within Clinical Genetics for patients and families of diverse ethnic groups. The post holder will also support clinic appointments, including arranging blood samples, and will need to liaise closely with clinicians and the laboratories to ensure smooth running of patient pathways. The GA will be supervised by Consultant Clinical Geneticists and Genetic Counsellors and supported by the patient pathway admin team.

Applicants from a range of backgrounds and experiences are welcomed. We are seeking a caring, compassionate individual, with excellent communication and organisational skills and with a flexible approach to provide excellent patient care. It is essential that the post holder is able to manage their own workload on a day-to-day basis and prioritise their work to meet deadlines, and an ability to communicate both in English and Urdu is highly desirable. The role is initially for two years.

About us

YRGS is one of 3 Clinical Genetics Services within the North East & Yorkshire Genomic Medicine Service Alliance (NEY GMSA), and provides Clinical Genetics services to a diverse population of 3.8 million across a large, varied geographical area. The service comprises an experienced team of Consultant Clinical Geneticists, Genetic Counsellors, Genomic Associates and Genetic Research Nurses/Practitioners, as well as junior doctors and trainee Genetic Counsellors, supported by a large clinical administrative team.

YRGS is based at Chapel Allerton Hospital in Leeds, with the Central Lab of the North East and Yorkshire Genomic Laboratory Hub situated at nearby St. Jamess University Hospital. Genetics clinics are held throughout the Yorkshire region, and virtually.
