Applications
are invited for a permanent Band 6 Mould Room Technician in the Leeds Cancer
Centre.
We
are looking for an enthusiastic Radiographer/Clinical Technologist with
experience in Radiotherapy to participate in all aspects of providing a
specialist service individual to all patients.
We
have a strong multi-disciplinary approach to working and the successful
candidate will be involved in the manufacturing and fitting of custom made
devices and participating in the day to day running of the Mould Room.
Applicants
will engage in the mentoring of students and medical staff rotating through
the department.
At
Leeds we make devices for over 1200 patients each year. This is a developing
and expanding service and, in addition to Head & Neck patients, also
includes paediatrics, brachytherapy, total skin electron therapy, electron
skin treatments and limb immobilisation.
Research
and innovation are at the heart of the service, with opportunities to be part
of projects as well as a large portfolio of local and national clinical
trials. We are a national leader in
extra-cranial SABR.
Leeds
Cancer Centre, situated in the Bexley Wing of St James is a major centre
treating over 7500 new radiotherapy patients per annum. The centre is
equipped with the latest technology, including 12 Versa HDs, a Flexitron
remote afterloading platform, MR-Sim and Gamma Knife ICON. Almost all planned
treatments are delivered with FFF, either with IMRT.
Main duties of the job
This
post is based in Mould Room. The main responsibilities are:
Manufacture of highly specialised
custom patient immobilisation and shielding devices
In conjunction with physics,
radiography and clinical staff decide upon optimal achievable patient
treatment position and manufacture appropriate immobilisation device
Manufacture intra-oral appliances,
e.g. mouth bites, stereotactic head-frame palette impressions
Advise clinicians on most suitable
immobilisation or shielding device for a particular patient

PRINCIPAL
DUTIES & AREAS OF RESPONSIBILITY
Manufacture of highly specialised

In conjunction with physics,
radiography and clinical staff decide upon optimal achievable patient
treatment position and manufacture appropriate immobilisation device

Advise clinicians on most suitable

Assist and instruct radiographers
in the positioning of patients having radiotherapy treatment
Reorganise patient process through
the treatment pathway based on judgement of patients ability to tolerate the
procedure
Participate in Mould Room
development
Manufacture dosimetry phantoms for
use by Clinical Scientists
Manufacture bespoke items for other
Trust departments e.g. physiotherapy, cardiology
Manufacture paediatric cranial
reshaping helmets for the Dental Institute Maxillo-facial department
Assist with the work of Treatment
Planning when required.
Any other duties appropriate to the
post which may be required form time to time by the Chief Clinical
Technologist Treatment Planning and Mould Room or the Head of External Beam
Radiotherapy
The
post holder must be able to:
communicate complex information
across professional boundaries (e.g. when resolving complex patient
immobilisation issues and discussing options with medical staff).
communicate with patients who have
difficulty hearing, understanding or whose first language is not English
and/or are highly distressed due to their diagnosis
persuade patients to accept the
need to undergo difficult or unpleasant procedures (e.g. the manufacture of
what might be regarded as a claustrophobic head mask)
reassure and calm patients (as
first point of contact for some cancer patients for their radiotherapy
treatment planning process)
instruct other professional staff
in Mould Room techniques to enable them to use Mould Room manufactured
devices correctly and safely (e.g. clinicians, Physicists, Radiographers and
other healthcare professionals)
assess patients dental condition
for suitability of immobilisation techniques and manufacture as appropriate
The post holder must also be able
in patient handling techniques (for patients with either physical or mental
disability); be aware of the risk posed and precautions needed when taking an
impression of a patient with open wounds after radical surgery or due to
invasive or fungating disease (infection control) and have good negotiation
skills.
