2. JOB PURPOSE/SUMMARY
The
Medical Physics & Engineering departments responsibilities include the
management of an extensive range of highly specialist medical equipment and
related services throughout the Trust, as well as community and private
healthcare institutions. The range of equipment includes but is not limited
to patient monitoring & life support equipment, surgical systems,
anaesthesia systems, ventilators, infusion devices, renal dialysis,
ultrasound, x-ray, radiotherapy and medical laboratory equipment.
Teams
of technical officers deliver these services and the incumbent is a senior
member of one of these teams, responsible to its Team Leader. He/she may be
required to deputise for the team leader during short periods of absence
(with the exception of personnel and financial management duties), and take
responsibility for managing specific additional tasks such as calibrating
test equipment or organising technical service manuals etc. The senior
technician will be expected to work closely and effectively with other
technical and clinical staff in the specialist clinical areas for which the
team is responsible, to ensure delivery of a high quality service. The post
may be based at either St Jamess University Hospital or the Leeds General
Infirmary.
Work
in a team, jointly responsible for the repair and maintenance of several
thousand items of medical equipment.
Provide
technical support to medical, nursing and laboratory staff.
Responsible
for the safe servicing, repair, calibration, storage and handling of
expensive specialist medical equipment (individual values range from £1000 to
over £100,000).
Identifies,
specifies and orders spare parts and accessories for own work and that of
trainees.
Responsible
for maintaining the equipment inventory database by recording own work and
own measurements on medical equipment.
Prioritise
breakdown calls and preventative maintenance tasks using knowledge of
clinical need, accessibility, loan equipment availability etc.
Supervises
trainee staff, provides technical support to non-specialists and provides
specialist advice to other technical staff on difficult fault finding and
repair issues in their area of specialism.
Evaluate
new equipment as part of equipment purchasing strategy.
Carry
out commissioning and acceptance testing on new medical equipment.
Carry
out authorised modifications to medical equipment.
Investigate
and writes technical reports on equipment involved in clinical incidents.
Propose
changes to operational policies that may impact on own area and other
professions.
Write
technical procedures for the departmental quality management system in area
of own speciality using word processor, spread sheet etc.
Takes
part in the out of hours on call rota.
Takes
part in project work as and when required.
4. PRINCIPAL DUTIES & AREAS OF
RESPONSIBILITY
Deputises for the Team leader
during short periods of absence, (with the exception of personnel and
financial management duties).
Work is guided by departmental
procedures, quality manual documents and national recommendations.
Proposes changes to policies,
operating manuals & sits on working groups when required.
Responsible for the safe service,
repair and calibration of highly complex medical equipment for use in
clinical diagnosis, treatment and life support of patients.
Uses own judgement to determine
suitability of equipment (in terms of patient safety) for clinical use,
undertakes risk assessments.
Takes lead responsibility for
specialist equipment such as anaesthetic machines, ventilators, point of care
testing, x-ray imaging systems, ultrasound equipment etc.
Travel to other hospitals, health
centres and patients homes as necessary for the execution of work.

7. INFECTION CONTROL
The
jobholder must comply at all times with the Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS
Trust Infection Control policies, in particular by practising Universal
Infection Control Precautions. Hand hygiene must be performed before and
after contact with patients and their environment.
8. HEALTH AND SAFETY / RISK MANAGEMENT
All
staff are responsible for working with their colleagues to maintain and
improve the quality of services provided to our patients and other service
users. This includes complying at all
times with the Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust Policies, including Health
and Safety policies, in particular by following agreed security and safer
working procedures, and reporting incidents using the Trust Incident
Reporting system

10. TRAINING AND PERSONAL DEVELOPMENT

jobholder will undertake all mandatory training required for the role.
11. COMMUNICATION & WORKING
RELATIONSHIPS
Communicates with team members and
other Medical Physics teams.
Develops effective working
relationships with clinical staff in specialist areas for which the team is
responsible.
Discusses complex equipment faults
and technical issues with equipment manufacturers and suppliers.
Negotiates and persuades own /
other staff and suppliers for example to meet performance targets, arrange
release of medical equipment for servicing etc.
Conveys technical information to
non-technical staff.
Provides training and instruction
to clinical users.
Discuss service needs with
clinicians & nursing staff both within the Trust and within community and
private healthcare.
12. SPECIAL WORKING CONDITIONS
i) PHYSICAL EFFORT:
Travels to patients homes, other
Trust sites and to other health care providers such as private hospitals,
health centres and G.P surgeries.
Need to move equipment weighing up
to 15Kg, typically two or more times a week.
Need to move equipment weighing 2
to 5 Kg several times a day.
Occasional requirement to move
heavy equipment from wall mountings for service / repair.
Repetitive equipment testing
sometimes required.
Occasional working in awkward
positions
ii) MENTAL EFFORT:
Concentration on planned maintenance
& fault finding
Interruptions from emergency
requests for repairs
iii)
EMOTIONAL EFFORT:
Works on patient connected
equipment under pressure in tense atmosphere in difficult areas such as
operating theatres during surgery and at ICU bedside often with distressed
relatives present (typically 2-3 times per week).
iv)
WORKING CONDITIONS:
Carries out work on mains powered
electronic systems, often live and working in awkward positions.
Work on high-pressure gas systems
Daily exposure to noise, solvents,
dust, clinical excretions, blood, medical gasses and x-rays.
Occasional exposure to laser
emissions when fault finding
