2. JOB PURPOSE
The
Medical Physics & Engineering departments responsibilities include the
management of an extensive range of highly specialist medical equipment and
related services throughout the Trust, as well as community and private
healthcare institutions. The range of equipment includes but is not limited
to patient monitoring & life support equipment, surgical systems,
anaesthesia systems, ventilators, infusion devices, renal dialysis,
ultrasound, x-ray, radiotherapy and medical laboratory equipment. Teams of
technical officers deliver these services and the incumbent is a senior
member of one of these teams, responsible to its Team Leader. He/she may be
required to deputise for the team leader during short periods of absence
(with the exception of personnel and financial management duties), and take
responsibility for managing specific additional tasks such as calibrating
test equipment or organising technical service manuals etc. The senior
technician will be expected to work closely and effectively with other
technical and clinical staff in the specialist clinical areas for which the
team is responsible, to ensure delivery of a high quality service. The post
may be based at either St Jamess University Hospital or the Leeds General
Infirmary.
3. JOB DIMENSIONS
Work in a team, jointly responsible
for the repair and maintenance of several thousand items of medical
equipment.
Provide technical support to
medical, nursing and laboratory staff.
Responsible for the safe servicing,
repair, calibration, storage and handling of expensive specialist medical
equipment (individual values range from £1000 to over £100,000).
Identifies, specifies and orders
spare parts and accessories for own work and that of trainees.
Responsible for maintaining the
equipment inventory database by recording own work and own measurements on
medical equipment.
Prioritise breakdown calls and
preventative maintenance tasks using knowledge of clinical need,
accessibility, loan equipment availability etc.
Supervises trainee staff, provides
technical support to non-specialists and provides specialist advice to other
technical staff on difficult fault finding and repair issues in their area of
specialism.
Evaluate new equipment as part of
equipment purchasing strategy.
Carry out commissioning and
acceptance testing on new medical equipment.
Carry out authorised modifications
to medical equipment.
Investigate and writes technical
reports on equipment involved in clinical incidents.
Propose changes to operational
policies that may impact on own area and other professions.
Write technical procedures for the
departmental quality management system in area of own speciality using word
processor, spread sheet etc.
Takes part in the out of hours on
call rota.
Takes part in project work as and
when required.

5. KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE
REQUIRED
Essential:
Professional electronics knowledge
through a BEng Honours Degree in electronics, computing or similar/equivalent
qualification / experience.
In depth knowledge of medical
electronics and other technologies used in medical equipment, procedures and
practice.
Post graduate diploma or
equivalent, underpinned by extensive experience in the field and specialist
equipment training.
Proven ability to interpret complex
facts, analyse and fault find on highly complex multi-faceted items of
specialist medical equipment.
In-depth knowledge of electrical
safety standards and other appropriate medical standards.
Excellent communication
skills. Ability to communicate complex
technical equipment-related information to staff, colleagues, suppliers. Can
persuade/negotiate with staff and suppliers.
Ability to continuously update and
learn new skills to keep abreast with new and emergent technology.
Manual dexterity, accurate hand-eye
co-ordination for use and manipulation of precision hand tools in the repair
of micro-electronic printed circuit boards and delicate precision mechanical
assemblies found in critical care medical equipment.
High level of computer literacy;
including the use of word processing and spread sheet software.
Registration with the Register of
Clinical Technologists, or eligibility to apply for registration within one
year.
Desirable:
Knowledge of database management software
and/or Structured Query Language.

Participate in the servicing and
equipment management activities of the Medical Physics Department, managing
own time.
Work to objectives set monthly by
the team leader.
Takes responsibility for specialist
area of work.
Makes and adjusts plans to meet
urgent calls from clinical areas, mindful of changes to theatre sessions and
availability of loan equipment etc.
Persuades and negotiates with
clinical users, suppliers and other teams for example to arrange access to
specialist equipment for planned maintenance work.
Daily work includes providing
calibration, safety checking, acceptance checking, repair and technical
advice on highly complex medical equipment.
Ability to concentrate on fine
detail during fault finding for prolonged periods and respond to many
unpredictable interruptions.
Ability to work flexibly and to
cope with large and unpredictable workload
Participates in the relevant
training and development of equipment users and staff within Medical Physics.
Supervises and takes part in
activities of technicians and trainees who may be allocated to him/her from
time to time.
Supports the construction of
clinical devices as appropriate and under the direction of the Head of
Medical Physics or designated deputy.
Plans and organises servicing for
specialist area, including liaising with users, suppliers
9. CORE KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING
In addition to technical knowledge
and experience the post holder must have a sound understanding of electrical
safety of medical equipment, knowledge of construction and workmanship
standards in medical electronics, a grasp of the underpinning legal framework
including indemnity agreements and an understanding of basic anatomy and
physiology.
In-depth knowledge of complex /
specialist life support equipment is essential at this level both for repair
/ maintenance work and when judgement of safest action to be taken must be
made in an emergency situation.
Appreciates working practice in
imaging suites, operating theatres and other clinical areas where specific
hazards exists or protocols must be followed, when called to repair equipment
in situ.
Appreciates biohazards.
Familiar with organisational
structure.
10. PRINCIPAL DUTIES & AREAS OF RESPONSIBILITY
Deputises for the Team leader
during short periods of absence, (with the exception of personnel and
financial management duties).
Work is guided by departmental
procedures, quality manual documents and national recommendations.
Proposes changes to policies,
operating manuals & sits on working groups when required.
Responsible for the safe service,
repair and calibration of highly complex medical equipment for use in
clinical diagnosis, treatment and life support of patients.
Uses own judgement to determine
suitability of equipment (in terms of patient safety) for clinical use,
undertakes risk assessments.
Takes lead responsibility for
specialist equipment such as anaesthetic machines, ventilators, point of care
testing, x-ray imaging systems, ultrasound equipment etc.
Travel to other hospitals, health
centres and patients homes as necessary for the execution of work.
