Job summary

We have a vacancy for an enthusiastic and motivated specialist technician to play a key supporting role in the care and maintenance of a broad range of life support medical equipment. The job will be based at St. James hospital but will necessitate working across the Trusts other sites. This is an opportunity for a skilled Medical Electronics Technician to discover a challenging and rewarding career working with the vast range of equipment used in life support, treatment and diagnosis of patients.

You will have a degree or equivalent qualifications in electronic engineering with knowledge of medical electronics, procedures and practice, underpinned by specific equipment training. You will either be a registered technologist or able to achieve this within the first year of appointment

Main duties of the job

The main duties of the role include:

Repair and Maintenance of sophisticate electronic / electromechanical medical devices in a range of clinical environments.

Lifecycle management of medical devices - procurement, acceptance, support and decommissioning.

Trust medical device compliance management.

Hazard and Field Safety management of medical devices.

Monitoring of Regulatory compliance of medical devices.

Managing medical devices loaned to the Trust.

Participation in the department's quality management system.

Some elements of user training.

Working with clinical users to diagnose faults with devices in hospital and clinical settings

Clinical Engineering is part of Medical Physics department in Leeds Teaching Hospital's NHS Trust. It is split into 4 service teams and reception under one service manager, a contracts & compliance team under another service manager. It also has a renal technical section and rehabilitation engineering support. Clinical Engineering has input to a wide variety of clinical specialisms, medical device support and work with thousands of assets from basics monitors o life support ventilators and anaesthetic machines. 2. JOB PURPOSE

The Medical Physics & Engineering departments responsibilities include the management of an extensive range of highly specialist medical equipment and related services throughout the Trust, as well as community and private healthcare institutions. The range of equipment includes but is not limited to patient monitoring & life support equipment, surgical systems, anaesthesia systems, ventilators, infusion devices, renal dialysis, ultrasound, x-ray, radiotherapy and medical laboratory equipment. Teams of technical officers deliver these services and the incumbent is a senior member of one of these teams, responsible to its Team Leader. He/she may be required to deputise for the team leader during short periods of absence (with the exception of personnel and financial management duties), and take responsibility for managing specific additional tasks such as calibrating test equipment or organising technical service manuals etc. The senior technician will be expected to work closely and effectively with other technical and clinical staff in the specialist clinical areas for which the team is responsible, to ensure delivery of a high quality service. The post may be based at either St Jamess University Hospital or the Leeds General Infirmary.

3. JOB DIMENSIONS

Work in a team, jointly responsible for the repair and maintenance of several thousand items of medical equipment.

Provide technical support to medical, nursing and laboratory staff.

Responsible for the safe servicing, repair, calibration, storage and handling of expensive specialist medical equipment (individual values range from £1000 to over £100,000).

Identifies, specifies and orders spare parts and accessories for own work and that of trainees.

Responsible for maintaining the equipment inventory database by recording own work and own measurements on medical equipment.

Prioritise breakdown calls and preventative maintenance tasks using knowledge of clinical need, accessibility, loan equipment availability etc.

Supervises trainee staff, provides technical support to non-specialists and provides specialist advice to other technical staff on difficult fault finding and repair issues in their area of specialism.

Evaluate new equipment as part of equipment purchasing strategy.

Carry out commissioning and acceptance testing on new medical equipment.

Carry out authorised modifications to medical equipment.

Investigate and writes technical reports on equipment involved in clinical incidents.

Propose changes to operational policies that may impact on own area and other professions.

Write technical procedures for the departmental quality management system in area of own speciality using word processor, spread sheet etc.

Takes part in the out of hours on call rota.

Takes part in project work as and when required.

5. KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE REQUIRED

Essential:

Professional electronics knowledge through a BEng Honours Degree in electronics, computing or similar/equivalent qualification / experience.

In depth knowledge of medical electronics and other technologies used in medical equipment, procedures and practice.

Post graduate diploma or equivalent, underpinned by extensive experience in the field and specialist equipment training.

Proven ability to interpret complex facts, analyse and fault find on highly complex multi-faceted items of specialist medical equipment.

In-depth knowledge of electrical safety standards and other appropriate medical standards.

Excellent communication skills. Ability to communicate complex technical equipment-related information to staff, colleagues, suppliers. Can persuade/negotiate with staff and suppliers.

Ability to continuously update and learn new skills to keep abreast with new and emergent technology.

Manual dexterity, accurate hand-eye co-ordination for use and manipulation of precision hand tools in the repair of micro-electronic printed circuit boards and delicate precision mechanical assemblies found in critical care medical equipment.
