PRINCIPAL
DUTIES & AREAS OF RESPONSIBILITY
Education
and Training
The
jobholder must participate fully in the training programme by:
Attending formal study sessions
Be willing to undertake
self-directed learning
Complete all tasks and assignments
Apply skills and knowledge in the
workplace
Contribute to regular performance
and progress reviews
As
part of their training role, the jobholder must undertake formal
qualifications, typically:
Level 4 diploma in Healthcare
Science
Technical certificates in
engineering
Functional skills certificates in
literacy, numeracy and ICT
Technical
(under supervision)
The
jobholder must assist in the provision of basic technical services including
equipment installation, repair, maintenance and calibration.
The
jobholder must assist in equipment planned preventative maintenance activity.
The
jobholder must assist in the production of devices in accordance with local
procedures and technical instructions.
Quality
Assurance (under supervision)
The
jobholder must participate in the local quality management system and comply
with its policies, procedures and instructions.
The
jobholder must assist quality related tasks such as audit, document management
and corrective action.
The
jobholder must assist in quality assurance and quality control activity on
medical equipment.
The
jobholder must carry out internal resource management tasks such as work
equipment maintenance and calibration.
Medical
Equipment Management
The
jobholder must be aware of the safety aspects of any medical device or
related equipment with which they may be involved
The
jobholder must take appropriate action to deal with identified discrepancies
including maintaining records and reporting the situation to more senior
members of staff.
Where
necessary, the jobholder must report discrepancies, incidents, identified
risk and hazards.
Develop
good working relationship
The
jobholder should develop good communication skills that demonstrate courtesy
and respect.
The
jobholder should form good relationships with other team members including
answering the telephone and passing on messages.
The
jobholder should support effective teamwork by undertaking other technical
activities, under direct supervision, that would be expected of assistant and
associated practitioners.

role of MPE engineering services is to support and advance patient care by

INFECTION
CONTROL
The
jobholder must comply at all times with the Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS
Trust Infection Control policies, in particular by practising Universal
Infection Control Precautions. Hand hygiene must be performed before and
after contact with patients and their environment.
HEALTH
AND SAFETY / RISK MANAGEMENT
All
staff are responsible for working with their colleagues to maintain and
improve the quality of services provided to our patients and other service
users. This includes complying at all
times with the Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust Policies, including Health
and Safety policies, in particular by following agreed security and safer
working procedures, and reporting incidents using the Trust Incident
Reporting system

TRAINING

The
jobholder must take responsibility in agreement with his/her line manager for
his/her own personal development by ensuring that Continuous Professional
Development remains a priority. The
jobholder will undertake all mandatory training required for the role.
COMMUNICATION & WORKING
RELATIONSHIPS
The
jobholder provides and receives routine information and instructions orally,
in writing and in electronic format.
This information is mainly to assist the jobholder in their work. As
well as communicating with colleagues and users of medical equipment, the
jobholder may also communicate with equipment manufacturers, materials and
component suppliers, external contractors, training providers and staff at
other NHS organisations as part of their normal duties.
SPECIAL WORKING CONDITION
i)
PHYSICAL EFFORT: Manual dexterity,
accurate hand eye co-ordination and use of precision instruments. E.g. repair work on sub-assemblies, making
adjustments to mechanical components.
An on-going requirement to move and lift
equipment weighing in the order of 10Kg such as radiation shielding lead, gas
bottles, tool chests many times each day.
Also a requirement to move equipment weighing in the order of 20Kg
such as large pieces of computer equipment, machine sub-assemblies and test
equipment, typically once or twice a day.
ii) MENTAL EFFORT: There is a daily requirement
to concentrate for prolonged periods when designing, soldering, fabricating,
etc.
iii)
EMOTIONAL EFFORT: Works in clinical
areas including treatment rooms and operating theatres during equipment
failure and during clinical acquaintance placements, typically once a month.
iv)
WORKING CONDITIONS: Job holders are
trained to work safely in areas where the following hazards have been
identified and controlled:
- Radiation (ionising and
non-ionising)
- Electricity (stored charges, medium and high voltages,
medium and high currents)
- High pressure gases
- High vacuum systems
- Unguarded machinery
- Toxic and hazardous materials
- Biologically contaminated equipment
- Moving and handling large, heavy
items of equipment
- Workshop and machinery hazards
(fumes; dust & particulate matter; working with lead, acids, oils,
coolants & solvents; working with materials & tools at elevated
temperatures; naked flames; high speed machinery; cutting tools; noise)
