Job summary

We have exciting opportunities for Band 2 Trainee Clinical Support Workers. The role is for those who are passionate about starting their career journey in healthcare. We are seeking to recruit motivated, caring and compassionate individuals that can support our nursing teams to deliver a high standard of care to our patients. We are looking for a team player who has good organisational skills and excellent communication skills. The role is a 6 month training contract consisting of a 3 week training which includes the 15 care standards alongside clinical practice on a ward or in a department.

No minimum entry level (no prior qualifications or experience required)

Must have values, desire, behaviours suited to health and care role

Must be able to work minimum of 30 hours per week. Training for this role will be delivered Monday to Friday therefore candidates must be able to commit to this

Opportunities across all sites with Leeds Teaching Hospital Trust.

You will be required to work all shifts, days/nights/evenings and weekends. We cant offer nights or weekends only 24/7 mix of shifts, 365 days a year.

The successful candidate will be actively involved in providing direct and indirect personal and clinical care for patients under the supervision of a registered nurse within each specialty. You will be assisting in the overall implementation of care as part of the multi-professional team with the expectation of delivering and maintaining high standards of acute and planned care. The successful candidate will be expected to practice in accordance with Leeds Teaching Hospital NHS Trust (LTHT) policies, guidelines, standards and statutory requirements and operate within defined competency boundaries. To ensure our patients receive high quality care in a safe environment you will be required to work a variety of shifts. These include early late, long day and night shifts to cover each day of the week including weekends and bank holidays.

Job responsibilities

PRINCIPAL DUTIES & AREAS OF RESPONSIBILITY

Education and Training

- To participate fully in the training programme for the trainee clinical support worker by:

i) Attending formal study sessions

ii) Be willing to undertake self-directed learning

ii) Complete all tasks and competencies by the end of the training programme

iii) Apply skills and knowledge to patient care in the clinical area

iv) Contribute to regular performance and progress reviews

- To complete successfully the clinical competencies related to national occupational standards as specified by the employer and the training organisation.

- Maintain high standards of care

- Maintain a safe working environment, reporting incidents, accidents, complaints.

- Understand the need to maintain and respect patient confidentiality

- Complete mandatory training.

- Participate in workplace evaluations and appraisals of performance.

- Undertake duties on different wards/depts as directed through the training schedule.

- Demonstrate compassion in all interactions with patients.

- Demonstrate respect for patients with particular regard for privacy and dignity.

- Act in such a way that safeguards the health and wellbeing of children & vulnerable adults at all times.

- Is familiar with and adheres to, the LTHT safeguarding policies.

Clinical activities to be undertaken under the direction and supervision of a registered practitioner once relevant competency achieved

- Contribute to the movement and treatment of patients to maximise their physical comfort.

- Check patients skin condition and inform staff of any changes.

- Assist other healthcare workers to support patients with hygiene and elimination needs, oral/eye care.

- Assist other healthcare workers to support patients in expressing their healthcare needs.

- Assist in the correct handling and measurement of bodily fluids and in the dispatch of specimens.

- Record observations and findings on fluid/food/stool charts.

- Assist patients in selecting meal, drinks and snack of choice and assist with eating and drinking, where necessary.

- Weigh patients and record results.

- Collect notes/X-rays/patient information from locations across the Trust.

- Collect medications from pharmacy (but not controlled drugs).

- Assist in the welcome and reception of patients into the clinical area.

- Assist in the safe disposal of linen and clinical waste from the clinical area.

Communication and Working Relationships

- Develop good communication skills that demonstrate courtesy and respect

- Form good relationships with other team members including answering the telephone and passing on messages

- Support effective teamwork by undertaking other clinical activities, under direct supervision, that would be expected of a Band 2 Clinical Support Worker

- Establish and maintain effective communication with patients, families and carers

- Ensure compliance with Trust policies and procedures regarding confidentiality of data and data security

- Communicate with colleagues and members of the multi-disciplinary team clearly and effectively in written, verbal and electronic format (this may include accessing and updating patient records on central databases or electronic systems).

- Maintain clear, concise and legible documentation adhering to standards in accordance with trust policies and guidance

- Escalate concerns with regards to patients physical or psychological needs, or changes in their clinical condition to a registered practitioner within appropriate time frames

- To be alert to issues of risk and concern about care provided raising any concerns observed via the Trusts Whistleblowing Policy and supporting processes
