Job summary
We
are looking to recruit motivated, caring, and compassionate individuals for
the role of Apprentice Phlebotomist. Phlebotomists are responsible for safely
obtaining blood samples from adults and children to support diagnosis and
ongoing treatment. This full-time (37.5 hours per week) apprenticeship is
undertaken within a fourteen month fixed-term contract, and provides an ideal
opportunity to begin your career in healthcare science at the Leeds Teaching
Hospitals NHS Trust. Upon successful completion of the apprenticeship, you
will receive a Level 2 Diploma in Healthcare Science. This will then allow
you to apply for permanent AfC Band 2 roles within Leeds Teaching Hospitals
Trust. Successful applicants will work as team members across all areas of
the Phlebotomy Service. There is an expectation within your training that you
will participate in the rota to work weekends and bank holidays in line with
Phlebotomy service provision. The role will commence in Feb 2025, and you
could spend your 14 months placement at any one of our Trust sites.
Candidates will be required to attend study sessions remotely and in person
at Leeds City college. Candidates will need to ensure they are available to
attend Leeds City college assessment dates on the 16th & 17th January
2025 and be over the age of 18 years on the date of the assessment day.
Interviews will held on Saturday 1st February 2025 for that have successfully
completed the assessment centre.
Main duties of the job
The
jobholder will be undertaking a training programme within the Leeds Teaching
Hospital NHS Trust (LTHT). The training will be delivered through formal
education either in-house and or via external providers, and clinical
placements. They will be involved in providing direct and indirect care for
patients in support of and supervised by a Phlebotomist and where identified as
appropriate by the Phlebotomy Supervisor. It is expected that the apprentice
will commit to self-directed study and successfully complete the training
programme within the contract period. The jobholder will contribute to the
maintenance of an environment for effective care. This job requires a high
degree of dexterity, skill and precision when performing blood collection.
These procedures are repetitive and may involve the job holder standing,
bending at the workstation or pushing a trolley for extended periods.
All

sites of St Jamess University Hospital and the Leeds General Infirmary, plus
Chapel Allerton Hospital, Seacroft Hospital and Wharfedale Hospital as well

non-routine requests for blood specimen collections Develop an understanding
and awareness of factors relating to specific blood tests Develop the skills
to ensure samples are correctly labelled and transported to appropriate
laboratories Develop the ability to identify, select and utilise a suitable
site fit for the purpose of blood collection Develop the ability to identify,
select and use suitable/appropriate equipment for the specimen collection
Develop the ability to communicate effectively with the patient prior to and
during obtaining a blood sample to minimise distress or discomfort caused
