Job summary
We are excited to be advertising the post of staff nurse within our Neuro and Spinal Surgery services, based at the LGI on Wards L24, L25 and L28 and Higher Observation (HOBs) unit. This advert will run alongside our Neurosciences recruitment event on the 22nd of April in the LGI. L28 is a fast paced 20 bedded spinal surgery ward caring for a mix of elective and acute patients before and after spinal surgery. L28 works closely with the spinal specialist nurse team to provide specialist care to patients who have had injuries to their spine helping them to get on the road to recovery, striving for the best possible outcomes for each patient and also as part of the enhanced recovery process for patient having elective spinal surgery.
L24 and L25 are fast paced Neurosurgery and Spinal Surgery wards which provide pre-operative and post-operative care for patients following both acute and elective operations. L24 and L25 are part of the regional centre for Neurosurgery. Both nursing teams collaborate with the therapy teams and wider multi-disciplinary team in providing care for patients that require extensive rehabilitation.
The brand new Higher Observation Unit is a purpose-built area with brand new equipment, based on ward L25.
Main duties of the job
Successful applicants would join one of our specialist Neuro and Spinal Surgery wards as a registered nurse and part of a multi-disciplinary team delivering excellent care to our patients whilst developing in your role and gaining new skills. We offer a 12 month education package for all our new starters including 1:1 support on the ward from our clinical education team to help you find your feet in the first weeks and months, followed by a mix of in person practical, and remote theory teaching sessions packages to deliver neurosciences specific knowledge and skills as well as ensuring access to development opportunities in order to set you up for your nursing career.
The role is to provide and be responsible for the assessment, planning, implementation and evaluation of individualised programmes of care. Successful applicants will deliver care without supervision and take responsibility as the prime care provider for a group of patients and at all times promote confidence in our commitment to provide excellent compassionate patient care.
Successful applicants will be involved in taking charge of the ward or department as necessary in the absence of the Sister or Charge Nurse.
Successful applicants will participate in the in-service training, preceptorship and mentorship of junior staff, post basic learners and students as well as maintaining your personal development.
Successful applicants will work within an environment caring for adult patients.

The Neuro and Spinal Surgery service is located in the Neurosciences CSU based at Leeds General Infirmary, it comprises of the Regional Centre for Neurosurgery, spinal surgery services, the Regional Centre for Stroke Thrombectomy as part of the hyper acute stroke unit, the acute stroke unit and the neurology unit. It covers inpatient and outpatient services and corresponding CNS teams.
