We are looking for individuals with a passion for care to apply for the Trainee CSW Academy.

We have placements available in several clinical areas.

Successful candidates will attend a 4-week training programme and will be supported to work through the 15 Standards of the Care Certificate. This will form part of the 6-month Preceptorship framework to support you in your new role. More details of which can be found in the supporting information.

Candidates will then be eligible to progress to a substantive or bank CSW post upon successful completion of the course.

Please note you must be 18 or over, able to commit to training Monday - Friday 20 hours per week (3.5 hours per day) during the initial 4-week programme, and able to work various shift patterns including early late and night shifts.

Main duties of the job

The successful candidate will be actively involved in providing direct and indirect personal and clinical care for patients under the supervision of a registered nurse within each speciality. You will be assisting in the overall implementation of care as part of the multi professional team with the expectation to deliver and maintain high standards of acute and planned care. The successful candidate will be expected to practice in accordance with Leeds Teaching Hospital NHS Trust (LTHT) policies, guidelines, standards, and statutory requirements and operate within defined competency boundaries.

Education and Training

To participate fully in the training programme for the trainee clinical support worker by:

i) Attending formal study sessions

ii) Be willing to undertake self-directed learning

ii) Complete all tasks and competencies by the end of the training programme

iii) Apply skills and knowledge to patient care in the clinical area

iv) Contribute to regular performance and progress reviews

To complete successfully the clinical competencies related to national occupational standards as specified by the employer and the training organisation.

Maintain high standards of care

Maintain a safe working environment, reporting incidents, accidents, complaints.

Understand the need to maintain and respect patient confidentiality

Complete mandatory training.

Participate in workplace evaluations and appraisals of performance.

Undertake duties on different wards/depts as directed through the training schedule.

Assist in the correct handling and measurement of bodily fluids and in the dispatch of specimens.

Record observations and findings on fluid/food/stool charts.

Assist patients in selecting meal, drinks and snack of choice and assist with eating and drinking, where necessary.

Weigh patients and record results.

Collect notes/X-rays/patient information from locations across the Trust.

Collect medications from pharmacy (but not controlled drugs).

Assist in the welcome and reception of patients into the clinical area.

Assist in the safe disposal of linen and clinical waste from the clinical area.

Communication and Working Relationships

Develop good communication skills that demonstrate courtesy and respect

Form good relationships with other team members including answering the telephone and passing on messages

Support effective teamwork by undertaking other clinical activities, under direct supervision, that would be expected of a Band 2 Clinical Support Worker

Establish and maintain effective communication with patients, families and carers

Ensure compliance with Trust policies and procedures regarding confidentiality of data and data security

Communicate with colleagues and members of the multi-disciplinary team clearly and effectively in written, verbal and electronic format (this may include accessing and updating patient records on central databases or electronic systems).

Maintain clear, concise and legible documentation adhering to standards in accordance with trust policies and guidance

Escalate concerns with regards to patients physical or psychological needs, or changes in their clinical condition to a registered practitioner within appropriate time frames

To be alert to issues of risk and concern about care provided raising any concerns observed via the Trusts Whistleblowing Policy and supporting processes.
