We are recruiting a permanent Medical Secretary within the Neurosciences CSU team of Neurology. This is an ideal opportunity for someone looking to expand their experience and knowledge of working in the NHS. The successful candidate will provide comprehensive secretarial support to clinical teams within the department, as well as interesting and varied admin duties.

General duties will include typing of correspondence, dealing with telephone enquiries, organizing diaries, assisting with data gathering and supporting the various referral to treatment targets. We are looking for a self-motivated, organized, flexible person who is able to work under pressure in a very demanding role.

Candidates will need excellent communication skills, the ability to work under minimal supervision and the ability to meet deadlines. Previous secretarial experience is essential, as is knowledge of the various referral to treatment policies and procedures.

Main duties of the job

Provide a wide-ranging PA service to a group of clinicians (the number of which will be determined by Departmental requirements and the job plan commitments of the clinical team concerned).

Manage the flow of patients, ensuring tests and/or appointments are booked within the necessary timescales escalating potential for delays to the PSC/Business Manager to ensure that prompt action is taken at all times in order to support strategic capacity/demand planning for the Organisation.

Be the departmental super-user/system administrator for voice recognition and digital dictation

Provide a comprehensive PA service to the Clinical Director/Lead Clinician and other medical colleagues.

Provide administrative support to Clinical Nurse Specialists where appropriate.

Taking phone calls and covering departmental phones when required.

Deal directly with patient enquiries on behalf of consultant/clinical team.

Administration duties to support departmental clinical audit and clinical governance where required, such as the collation of information for reports.

Diary management for consultant staff including organising meetings, preparing meeting paperwork and taking minutes as required.

Organising travel arrangements for consultant staff.

About us

Neurology is within the Neurosciences CSU.

The CSU brings together the core services providing the clinical management support for the Departments of Neurology, Neurosurgery, Spines, Pain and Neurophysiology. Mr Robert Rathbone is the General Manager of the CSU, Dr Jonathan Bilmen is Clinical Director and Mr Robin Darby is Head of Nursing. Dr Maruthi Vinjam is Clinical Lead for Neurology and Neurophysiology and Ms Linda Hayward is the Business Manager for Stroke and Neurology.

A full neuro-physiological service is provided on-site and there are close links with the Department of Neuro-psychology.
