Job summary

An exciting opportunity has arisen for an experienced team medical secretary in the Neurology department at Leeds General Infirmary. This is a permanent post of 37.5 hours per week and will include some home working once the successful candidate has completed full training.

We are looking for a highly motivated, flexible and hardworking person. Candidates will need excellent communication skills, the ability to work as part of a team, to work under minimal supervision and to deadlines. Previous secretarial experience/experience of working in an office environment is essential. A good telephone manner and experience of handling a high volume of queries from stakeholders is essential. The candidate must be able to prioritise their workload and be able to work under pressure.

RSA II in audio/copy typing or equivalent is an essential requirement to undertake this varied and interesting role, along with GCSE or equivalent qualifications in maths and English.

Main duties of the job

Main duties include:

Typing/proof reading clinical correspondence relating to outpatient and inpatient attendances and other patient related correspondence on behalf of consultants and other clinical teams.

Use a range of IT skills to support the clinical work of the consultants e.g. use of databases and spreadsheets to monitor test results for patients.

Support administrative processes as deemed appropriate by the PSC and Business Manager.

To support the clinical teams in the delivery of excellent patient care by actively working with colleagues and other departments to ensure that all patients registered within the service are proactively supported through their patient journey. (This would include but is not limited to: ensuring that follow up and/or discharge appointments have been made for patients when required, escalating to the PSC where appointments have been booked outside the requested timescales).

Any other general administrative duties associated with the consultant/clinical teams outpatient and inpatient workload.

Cover band 4 secretarial workload when required i.e. for sick and annual leave.

About us

The Centre for Neurosciences CSU provides the clinical management support for the departments of Neurology, Neurosurgery, Spinal Surgery, Pain, Stroke and Neurophysiology. Mr Robert Rathbone is the General Manager of the CSU, Dr John Steele is Clinical Director and Ms Linda Hayward is the Business Manager for Neurology, Stroke and Neurophysiology.

There are currently 14 medical secretaries in the Neurology department, supported by 1 x Business Manager, 1 x Patient Services Co-ordinator and 7 admin clerks.
