Job summary

The Clinical Neurophysiology service in Leeds is continually striving to improve. The department has expanded its consultant and physiologist base and is about to receive new and updated EEG equipment. We are currently meeting new service demands within this large teaching hospital where all the major specialties, both adult and pediatric are covered.

We currently have a vacancy for a band 7 advanced specialist practitioner (Sleep service lead).

The successful candidate will take the lead for sleep EEG. This includes responsibility for the MSLT service: involving attendance at Sleep MDT meetings, maintenance of the waiting list/scheduling of appointments/liaising with patients and their families and other general duties. They would be responsible for service development and work alongside the clinical service manager to improve and expand the service.

Main duties of the job

This post would also involve performing a wide range of routine investigations, from all specialties for both adults and paediatrics, across the 2 sites.

This includes:

EEG - Routine, portable, ambulatory, sleep, video telemetry.

NCS - routine CTS/ulnar clinics.

Evoked potentials - ERG/VER and SSEP.

The successful candidate will also be required to take part in the theatre monitoring rota and the weekend on call rota.

The role also includes teaching and training.

Training and support where necessary will be provided as you will be encouraged to expand your role.

Applicants should possess BSc (Hons) Clinical Physiology (Neurophysiology) degree (or equivalent qualification e.g BTEC ONC/HNC in MPPM/ECNE Part 1) along with evidence of acquisition of post graduate level clinical competencies (e.g. Ambulatory EEG/Video telemetry/technician led nerve conduction study clinics/Intraoperative monitoring/Electroretinography).

About us

The department of clinical neurophysiology is based at the LGI and provides an extensive range of highly specialised neurophysiology diagnostic procedures for patients of all ages from a range of specialties.

Responsible for the day to day management of a specialism within (Neurophysiology) service, including management of Clinical Physiologists.

They will be responsible for the effective use of resources. Working in collaboration with the HCSM and management, the ASP will be required to manage the service budget for consumables and action equipment orders within their specialism.

Responsible for policy developments and for service planning in collaboration with clinicians, HCSM and managers.

Provides highly complex, specialist clinical neurophysiological diagnostic procedures to patients of all ages from a wide range of specialties. Undertakes interpretation of results and provides preliminary results and advice to clinicians.

Job responsibilities

The post holder is accountable to the Health Care Science Manager (HCSM). This post has 2 components-:

1) Specialist role

Each Advanced Specialist Practitioner (ASP) will take the lead on a specialism within the overall service.

The successful candidate will have a special interest in line with the needs of the service e.g. intraoperative monitoring, neurophysiology support for critical care areas, intracranial recordings etc. It is expected that the successful applicant will take responsibility for further development of their special area of interest and skill in line with the Departments development plan, Clinical Service Unit priorities and under the supervision of the Clinical Service Manager.

As the lead they will, working under the supervision and guidance of the Health Care Science Manager (HCSM), be responsible for managing their particular specialism including allocating the workload and the day to day management of the staff related to the service. They will take responsibility for their own training and development within this field and in turn use this increased knowledge in the training and development of staff working alongside them. This will include both their neurophysiology colleagues and other medical staff, such as doctors, specialist nurses etc.

Each ASP will be responsible, within his/her specialism for policy development, financial planning and budget monitoring (in collaboration with the HCSM) and will work with managers and clinicians to help plan the service.

Each ASP will be responsible for service improvements within their lead role /specialism, in accordance with national guidance and for maintaining the quality of the service.

2) Generic role

The ASP will be responsible for undertaking all clinical neurophysiology diagnostic procedures provided by the department.

This will include both routine and highly specialist procedures. However the band 5 physiologists will be mainly responsible for the routine procedures with the specialist ones being escalated to the ASP.

As well as performing the procedures the ASP will be responsible for analysing, interpreting and providing factual reports to clinicians regarding them. They will be expected to undertake these procedures without the need for supervision and be in a position to deal with any problems relating to them as they arise.

The Post holder will be expected to work closely and effectively with other technical, clinical and clerical staff, within the department to ensure the delivery of a high quality service.

The role will also see the ASP be responsible for the general training and development of junior and trainee staff within the department.

The post holder will participate in audit of activities and undertake research and development.

The department is responsible for providing a comprehensive clinical neurophysiology diagnostic service to patients of all ages from a wide range of specialties suffering from a wide variety of medical disorders. The service is provided across the trust, to GPs and other regional hospitals

As the specialism lead the ASP will be required to effectively manage the service provision to the appropriate clinical services.

These include: workload planning and day-to-day management of staff, responsibility for service development, responding to new indications for specialist services and appraising advances in technology. They will be involved in the administration of the service including scheduling, activity recording, resource management and business case development (for equipment and for service development), within their lead role/ specialism.

They will be responsible for the effective use of resources. Working in collaboration with the HCSM and management, the ASP will be required to monitor the service budget for consumables and action equipment orders within their specialism.

They will be responsible for implementation of the Trusts governance and quality priorities in respect to the specialist service. This will include responsibility for audit, peer review, patient satisfaction/complaints and relevant aspects of patient safety.

Within their specialist area the post holder will be responsible for the training and updating of their neurophysiology colleagues as well as taking part in the training of doctors and nurses from other areas of the trust.

The post holder would be expected to act as the equipment controller for their specialism which involves being responsible for all equipment, including regular service and safety testing, writing business plans and working with managers and clinicians regarding purchase of new and replacement equipment.

The post holder will carry out all neurophysiology procedures under the direction of the Health Care Science Manager. The department provides a service to a large centre for neurosciences, and as would be expected the neurophysiological investigations require a high degree of skill and experience.

The post holder will take part in the training and supervision of the junior staff within the department.

The post holder will participate in the out of hours rota, triaging all Neurophysiology request and advising the on call consultant as appropriate
