Pharmacist (PhD studentship) (XR06)

Leeds Teaching Hospitals

Information:

This job is now closed

Job summary

This is a fully funded opportunity for a UK registered pharmacist to undertake a PhD alongside 0.2FTE clinical work within Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust (LTHT). This doctoral fellowship is a result of partnership between the University of Bradford and Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust. This is a fully-funded project for a maximum of 4 years full-time; applicants will receive a stipend and tuition fees will be funded. Both part-time and full-time study options are possible. The successful candidate will be expected to start February 2024. UK applicants only.

The successful candidate will also be provided with 0.2WTE clinical employment by LTHT. You will work one day a week to provide pharmacy services and clinical care to patients, as part of a team of pharmacists and pharmacy technicians.

Main duties of the job

You will be supported to undertake a PhD that will examine the implementation of pharmacogenomics within secondary care organisations via a multi-methods exploration of prescriber education and workforce development requirements.

Pharmacogenomic testing can be used to discover which variants of genes an individual carries, and whether they impact on the response to medicines they are given. This information can be used to guide the choice of medicine and dose, increasing the likelihood that each person receives the most effective medicine for them, at the best dose, the first time they are treated. Pharmacists are well positioned to implement clinical pharmacogenomic services, however, education, training and resources are needed to support these roles more fully. It is therefore acknowledged that an education and training workplan to upskill the workforce on knowledge of pharmacogenomics is required. At present, it is not known what the current provision of genomics education in England is, how it has been received by (trainee) healthcare professionals and how best this can be delivered. This project will generate knowledge, tools and intervention(s), which will be shared more widely across the academic and healthcare sectors.

About us

This PhD studentship is based in the School of Pharmacy & Medical Sciences (University of Bradford) and the successful candidate will be supported by a variety of research groups including MORG (Medicines Optimisation Research group), SoTL/PedR/EIRD, Faculty Health Society People and Place and the Wolfson CAHR. The PhD candidate will be situated mostly at the University campus with blended and flexible working options available.
