Job summary

Are you looking for an exciting challenge where you can lead and work within a dynamic team to influence and improve medicine outcomes for patients who need critical care?

You will join a great team of experienced pharmacists delivering a high quality clinical pharmacy service to the critically ill patients in Leeds. The Critical Care Clinical Service Unit, rated outstanding by a recent CQC inspection, currently has 80 beds across 5 units, including specialist neurosurgical and cardiac surgery units. The bed base will be expanding over the next 5 years into the new state of the art hospital of the future being built on the LGI site. The pharmacy team are well established members of the critical care team and are vital and valued members of the MDT.

Main duties of the job

You will lead, deliver and develop the medicines service to one of the units as well as having the opportunity to build your skills and relationships across the other units and with the clinical leadership team in the Adult Critical Care.

Work closely with Clinicians and Nursing colleagues to support and promote the safe and effective use of medicines within critical care as well as ensuring the cost effective use of resources.

Act as a specialist role model and an expert in critical care medicine, providing highly specialised information, advice, and training

Proactively contribute to delivering outstanding patient care

- Supports the Trust's Prescribing Standards and challenges practice where prescribers have not adhered to the Medicines Code.

- Pharmacists who are registered as prescribers will, with the agreement of the clinical director of the speciality, prescribe within their level of competence, to support patient care.

- Plan, manage, monitor and review individual patient care plans.

- Participate in consultant ward rounds and multi-disciplinary team meetings.

- Manage difficult and ambiguous problems, often when information is limited.

- Undertake risk management, including investigating clinical incidents in the clinical area and ensuring compliance with medicine legislation.

- The post holder will be expected to identify, where necessary, areas that require service changes and develop a strategy to carry out the change through consultation with senior colleagues within and outside the pharmacy.

- Manage the introduction of new drugs, including unlicensed drugs, into the clinical speciality.

- Manage the clinical pharmacist input into clinical trials.

- Develop and update policies for the safe, effective and economic use of medicines through discussion with medical and nursing staff.

- Monitor and interpret expenditure on medicines within own clinical speciality

- Undertakes own research/audit within clinical speciality

- Supervise, teach, and assess junior pharmacy staff completing training modules within the clinical area.

- The post holder is also expected to participate in the training of other clinical professionals within their specialist area as requested.
