Job summary

Do you want to contribute to a world-leading cancer register on children and young people, assessing long-term health and social outcomes? Do you have exceptional data collection and clinical coding skills and are you looking for the next challenge? Are you able to juggle multiple tasks and see them through to completion?

You will manage all aspects of data collection for the cancer registration process for the Yorkshire Specialist Register of Cancer in Children and Young People ensuring data are accurately stored and available for statistical analysis and reporting. You will have responsibility for collecting high quality demographic and coding clinical data for all new registrations from 16 different acute hospital Trusts across the Yorkshire and the Humber geographical area; approximately 400 new registrations are made annually. This will involve liaison with a wide range of people and services across the NHS including the National Cancer Registration and Analysis Service (NCRAS), patient medical records, data/IT managers and research nurses.

Main duties of the job

We are seeking a Data Collection & Clinical Coding Co-ordinator to join our team. You should significant hands-on experience of clinical data collection or coding in the NHS or research sector. You will have good IT skills to manage and process electronic data feeds from multiple providers. Responsibility for data quality, completeness and timeliness is integral to the position. Therefore, excellent attention to detail and self-management skills for planning and prioritising are essential. Strong communication skills are essential for the role when liaising with NHS Trusts to abstract cancer registration data.

You will be based within the Yorkshire Register research group which carries out a programme of epidemiology and applied health research, including the impact of treatment on cancer survival and other clinical outcomes. You will assist the Registry Statistician and Data Managers with data cleaning and quality assurance and support the process for ethical and regulatory approval. Occasional travel is required to visit designated hospitals for the abstraction of data from patients medical records.

  • Overseeing clinical and socio-demographic data collection including co-ordinating the receipt and validation of electronic datasets and preparing data for registration, occasionally requiring visits to designated hospitals;
  • Maintaining regular contact with paediatric and Teenage and Young Adult oncology departments in Leeds, Sheffield and all other NHS Trusts in Yorkshire to ensure all eligible cancer registration records are complete and up-to-date;

  • Monitoring changes in cancer coding systems (e.g. ICD-O, staging) and working with the Register Data Managers to assimilate these into the database;
  • Organising the production of regular reports on data quality for meetings and/or the team as requested;
  • Supporting the delivery of day-to-day research activity relevant to the Registry, maintaining relevant project documentation e.g. data collection Standard Operating Procedures.
