Job summary
This
Fellow post will work alongside the two Consultants who sub-specialise in
Paediatric Oncology Surgery (Mr Mark Powis and Ms Bhanu Lakshminarayanan). The
Fellow will support in a rolling 1:10 rota and be involved in covering all
aspects of inpatient care including long day ward cover and night shifts.
During the other weeks the post holder will be involved in other aspects of the
paediatric surgical service, including attending outpatient clinics,
theatres and performing audits and will
also have exposure to other activities within the department.
Main duties of the job
The
Fellow in Paediatric Surgery is based at the Leeds General Infirmary in West
Yorkshire. This role is suitable for applicants post CCT or equivalent in
Paediatric surgery. It is ideally suited to candidates wishing to work in a
large teaching hospital which provides many specialist services and is ideal
for anyone wishing to pursue a career in pediatric surgery, specifically
Paediatric Colorectal Surgery.
About us
The
department provides exposure to all surgical aspects of children ranging from 0
16 years. This includes general surgery of childhood to highly specialised
skills in fields of Thoracic Surgery, Upper GI Surgery, Lower GI Surgery,
Hepatobiliary Surgery, Oncology Surgery, Neonatal Surgery and Urology. There
are 2/3 consultants per specialty providing elective specialty work and all
consultants participate in acute on calls (1:9) to provide general surgery for
children and trauma service.

who sub-specialise in Paediatric Colorectal Surgery (Mr Jonathan Sutcliffe, Mr
Chris Parsons and Ms Kelly Hoffman). The Fellow will support in a rolling 1:10

day ward cover and night shifts. During the other weeks the post holder will be
involved in other aspects of the paediatric surgical service, including
attending outpatient clinics, theatres, MDTs, Ward rounds, outreach with
Yorkshire region?? and performing audits and will also have exposure to other
activities within the department.
As
the Colorectal Fellow there is an expectation you will have a role in the
administrative running of the colorectal service.
The
post holder will support the on call rota equivalent to ST3+ (HST). This
includes on call cover of the paediatric surgical ward on 42, surgical newborn
unit, PICU, outliers, A&E and CAT units and theatres or clinics and all
external referrals. This gives all trainees an opportunity to see the breadth
of patients in paediatric surgery and manage them both in an elective setting
and a sick child.
There
are several theatre lists both emergency and elective lists that happen on a
daily basis and several clinics that happen daily. Trainees are encouraged to
go to any of these as per their choice and availability. All trainees are
allocated a clinical supervisor within the department and if they do not have
an educational supervisor in their rotation are allocated one within the
department as well.
All
trainees should attend the daily morning handover at 8:00- 8:30am and join the
ward round if they are not going to either theatre or clinic.
