Job summary
We are looking for a doctor to join our haematology department and work alongside the existing middle grade staff to cover both inpatient and outpatient work. The successful candidate will have the opportunity to rotate through a variety of subspecialty areas within haematology, gaining experience in the management of patients with myeloid and lymphoid malignancies, myeloma, patients undergoing autologous and allogeneic stem cell and CAR-T cell therapy, and patients with non-malignant haematological conditions. The appointee will also have the opportunity to gain competencies in bone marrow biopsies and basic morphology skills. Opportunities to take part in research or audit work are readily available.
Main duties of the job
The appointee will work as part of a team on our inpatient wards. The inpatient teams are split into myeloma, lymphoma, CLPD, myeloid and bone marrow transplant. Within each team there will be a consultant, specialist registrar, clinical nurse specialist and also a mixture of IMT and foundation doctors. Our teams are also supported by a group of Advanced Clinical Practitioners and Physician Associates. The majority of the workload is made of up inpatient reviews for our patients on the ward, managing toxicities from chemotherapy and complications such as neutropenic sepsis. Team members also take it in turns to cover our ambulatory care and day units where patients may need review during their outpatient treatment. The appointee would also be given the opportunity to join one of the speciality clinics under the supervision of the consultant team.
About us
The haematology department at SJUH is led by a team of 21 consultants, all with their own subspecialty interests. The department has a very active clinical trials service with over 200 patients treated as part of a clinical trial in 2024 to date. The department has an expanding Cellular Therapy service and is a CAR-T treatment centre. The majority of inpatients are treated on two dedicated haematology wards, each with 20 side rooms for patients. Adjacent to this is our ambulatory care unit and haematology day unit where outpatient clinics take place. Additional haematology patients are cared for within bedspaces in the oncology CSU.
The medical team also work alongside a team of highly experienced senior nurses on the inpatient wards, along with dedicated clinical nurse specialists within each team and a wonderful network of specialised dieticians, pharmacists and therapists.
