Job summary

This is a 10PA locum appointment for a Consultant Spinal Surgeon. This post will be available from

August 2025 for a period of 6 months.

The successful applicant should possess FRCS (Tr & Orth) or FRCS (Neurosurgery) and should be on the Specialist Register or within six months of being admitted to the Register for trainees if currently in a training programme within the UK, or have references which have been authorised by the Deputy Medical Director and Clinical Director.

Applicants should have established skills in complex spinal surgery including at least one year of dedicated complex spinal fellowship training. Excellent communication and team working skills, a strong commitment to teaching and service development are essential.

Spinal Surgery is within the Centre for Neurosciences CSU

The CSU brings together the core services providing Spinal Surgery, Neurology, Neurosurgery, Neurophysiology and Pain.

Main duties of the job

This post will deliver 10PAs as part of the Spinal Surgery team with a full time commitment to complex spinal surgery. Acute responsibilities will include taking part in a 1:12 spinal only on-call rota. The elective practice will focus on complex spinal surgery only. Candidates are expected to have experience of all facets of spinal surgery and have undertaken dedicated post CCT training in complex spinal surgery. There will be opportunities to contribute to teaching and research.

About us

The post will be based at Leeds General Infirmary. The Spinal Surgery department was created in 1997 following the centralisation of services from across Leeds and Wakefield. The two groups of spinal surgeons were amalgamated in 2006 and a full spinal on call rota instituted in 2013. Spinal surgical patients are now co-located on the same wards at the Leeds General Infirmary, providing a highest standard secondary and tertiary centre serving a population of approximately 2.5 million people.

To deliver care to patients who require spinal surgical interventions at the LGI site:

Out-patient clinics

Supervision of patients

Care of in-patients on a Spinal Surgery rota with an on call frequency of 1:12.

Contribute to Specialist Multi-disciplinary team meetings

To link with Consultant colleagues in other relevant site specialist teams within the spinal team and across the spinal surgery service.

To work with colleagues in Spinal surgery to deliver the acute spinal on call (on the Spinal rota with an on-call frequency of 1 in 12). This includes both out-of-hours cover in addition to acute ward rounds during normal working hours.

To contribute to research, teaching, and new developments within the Spinal surgery service. The post holder will be encouraged to facilitate and contribute to the current clinical research programs on going in the department.

REQUIREMENTS OF THE POST

3.1 General Training and Qualifications

The appointee must hold accreditation in FRCS (Tr & Orth) or FRCS (Neurosurgery) or equivalent and have completed higher specialist training (or equivalent) if currently in a training programme within the UK.

Applicants must be on the Specialist Register or within six months of being admitted to the Register for trainees if currently in a training programme within the UK or have references which have been authorised by the Deputy Medical Director and Clinical Director.

Applicants must provide information regarding their status from the GMC and/or relevant Royal College at the time of application, in order for their application to be progressed further.

Experience

The appointee must be able to demonstrate a high level of clinical experience and competence in all aspects of spinal surgery and appropriate experience in complex spinal surgery. The postholder will deliver the regional on call Spinal surgery service. The postholder will be expected to deliver adult Spinal surgery work both complex and non-complex.

Clinical Audit

The appointee will be expected to contribute and, where appropriate, take the lead in the following:

Mortality and morbidity meetings;

Clinical audit programmes;

Development and application of agreed clinical guidelines.

This is to be included in allocated time in the individuals job plan as a supporting programmed activity. It would be expected that the time allocated for this would include attendance at the relevant departmental audit meeting(s) and that such attendance would be recorded (in accordance with the Trusts clinical audit policy).

In the discharge of these responsibilities the candidate will be expected to maintain and update his/her skills and knowledge through appropriate continuing medical education.

TEACHING

The Trust as a teaching hospital recognises the importance of links with the University of Leeds, School of Medicine for the undergraduate teaching and all Consultant and medical staff are required to provide an appropriate contribution to the undergraduate teaching programme.

The post-holder will be required to participate in the undergraduate teaching programme for the school of Medicine, University of Leeds, which is organised on a speciality or clinical area basis.

The post-holder will be required to collaborate with clinical colleagues to deliver appropriate undergraduate teaching in accordance with the Trust contract with the NHS Executive in association with the University of Leeds.

The appointee will be expected, with colleagues to also contribute to the teaching of postgraduates, including the teaching programme for SpRs in Trauma & Orthopaedics in the Local Education and Training Board.

The Spinal Unit is supported by four senior interface spinal fellows and three junior spinal fellows plus 4 T&O registrars and 8 FY1 doctors. There are 9 StRs within neurosurgery and 11 SHO grade staff. These rotate through the spinal service during their training. The wards are also supported by Advanced Nurse Practitioners (ANPs).

There are 9 Neurosurgical consultants who also have an elective spinal surgery practice alongside their neurosurgical practice.
