Job summary
We
are inviting applications for a 12 month fixed term trust doctor post, at
Internal Medicine Training level (suitable for a FY3 trainee) in
gastroenterology at the Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust. The post is
available to start in August 2025.
This
is an exciting opportunity to experience inpatient gastroenterology and
hepatology including transplant, in a large, friendly teaching hospital
department. This would provide excellent experience for any doctor considering
a career in any medical or acute specialty, previous fellows have been
successful in their applications to the national training schemes.
The
post-holder will work across our base wards and contribute to the combined
FY1/IMT on-call rota. The role is well supported by resident registrars and
multidisciplinary ward teams. The posts
are not accredited for training but there will be an allocated educational
supervisor and the post holder will be encouraged to complete portfolio
evidence.
Candidates
must be fully registered with the General Medical Council and must hold a
licence to practice at the time of application.

Main duties of the job
The
post-holder will contribute to inpatient care and occasionally outpatient
clinics (primarily for training) and the junior out of hours resident rota.
Training will be appropriate for the post-holders level of experience. Ward
rounds are conducted daily by consultants or registrars. There is consultant
on-call cover at all times in gastroenterology and hepatology.
We have a weekly programme of departmental CPD
activity. This includes histopathology, radiology and clinical governance
meetings. There are plenty of opportunities to develop teaching skills in ward
based or more formal settings, including simulation.

Gastroenterology
and hepatology in Leeds is based at St Jamess University Hospital. We also
provide outpatient services at Leeds General Infirmary and Wharfedale General
Hospital. We are large yet cohesive departments. We provide care for all
aspects of gastrointestinal and liver disease to a large local population and
specialty services to the wider region.
Our
inpatient bed base is in the modern Bexley wing at SJUH. Our wards have
excellent, well established teams of nursing staff and we are well supported by
our experienced pharmacists, dieticians and radiologists.
Our
trainees gain valuable experience in managing patients with a range of
conditions across our subspecialty services. These include IBD, enteral and
parenteral nutrition (including home PN), general hepatology, liver transplant
medicine, hepatic malignancy, small bowel disease and pancreaticobiliary
medicine.
There
is a strong research background to the unit and close links with the Clinical
Research Network. There are opportunities for fellows to work on our portfolio
studies, with our research nurses, or develop their own audit or research
project.
We
have a regular programme of departmental teaching and the post holder will be
encouraged to participate in IMT teaching sessions.
Candidates
should hold a primary medical qualification and have a subsequent minimum of 2
years clinical experience. Evidence of achievement of foundation competencies
is required. Candidates must hold a full Licence to Practice with the General
Medical Council at the time of application. Candidates should hold a
certificate in Advanced Life Support from the UK Resuscitation Council, or an

The
out of hours duties include clerking specialty admissions and providing the
first tier of cover for ward patients. There is no general medicine rota
commitment with this post. There is at least one registrar on-call at all times
and the usual registrar cover is separate for gastroenterology and hepatology.
The consultants operate a 24 hour on-call system and look after inpatients in 1
or 2 week blocks.
The
post-holder will be encouraged to complete an audit or quality improvement
project. If desired there are opportunities to work with the Clinical Research
Network team and particularly our research nurses, to contribute to existing
clinical trials; training in good clinical practice and in trial recruitment is
available.
The

with the aim of providing experience in different areas of gastroenterology,
the opportunity to develop a project and preparing the post-holder for further
