Job summary
This
is a 10PA locum appointment for a Consultant Paediatric Haematology, with
special interests in Malignant Haematology and Stem Cell Transplantation. This
post will be available from February 2025 for a period of 12 months.
The
post will be based at Leeds General Infirmary.
We
are looking for an enthusiastic haematologist to join the current paediatric
haematology consultants with a focus on malignant haematology and stem cell
transplantation.
The
successful applicant should possess MB ChB or equivalent qualification and
should be included on the Specialist Register or within 6 months of CCT at the
time of interview, if currently within a training programme within the UK. In accordance with the consultant appointment
regulations, all other categories of doctors must be on the Specialist
Register.
Applicants
should have established skills in Paediatric Haematology and its related
specialties including malignant haematology and stem cell transplantation. A
strong commitment to undergraduate and postgraduate teaching and a research
interest is desirable.

Main duties of the job
2. OBJECTIVES OF THE POST
To provide, with consultant &
multi-disciplinary colleagues in the paediatric haematology and oncology team,
an emergency and elective regional service for children and young people with
haematological disorders, with particular responsibility for leukaemia and
haematopoietic stem cell transplant.
To share on-call responsibility with
the other consultants in the paediatric haematology and oncology team. This
comprises an attending on call for the whole service and also a commitment to
the non-malignant haematology telephone advice on call rota if appropriately
trained. If the appointee is trained appropriately to join the non-malignant
haematology rota for telephone advice, then their attending on call commitment
will be reduced.
To provide advice and support to the
other paediatric specialists in Leeds Childrens Hospital and to those caring
for children and young people in other hospitals who refer to Leeds.
To participate in the
multi-professional paediatric clinical governance programmes, and clinical
management meetings.
To participate in education,
supervision and training of junior medical staff.
To participate in the active
departmental research programme and/or develop appropriate research interests
that will benefit the service.
To be
responsible for the day-to-day care of the paediatric and young adult
haematology inpatients with haematological disorders, including leukaemia and
those undergoing stem cell transplant.

The
appointee will be expected to contribute and, where appropriate, take the lead
in the following:
Mortality and morbidity meetings;
Clinical audit programmes;
Development and application of agreed
clinical guidelines.
This
is to be included in allocated time in the individuals job plan as a
supporting programmed activity. It would
be expected that the time allocated for this would include attendance at the
relevant departmental audit meeting(s) and that such attendance would be
recorded (in accordance with the Trusts clinical audit policy).
In
the discharge of these responsibilities the candidate will be expected to
maintain and update his/her skills and knowledge through appropriate continuing
medical education.
4. TEACHING
The
Trust as a teaching hospital recognises the importance of links with the
University of Leeds, School of Medicine for the undergraduate teaching and all
Consultant and medical staff are required to provide an appropriate
contribution to the undergraduate teaching programme.
The post-holder will be required to
participate in the undergraduate teaching programme for the school of Medicine,
University of Leeds, which is organised on a speciality or clinical area basis.
The
post-holder will be required to collaborate with clinical colleagues to deliver
appropriate undergraduate teaching in accordance with the Trust contract with
the NHS Executive in association with the University of Leeds.
5. JOB PLAN AND WORKING ARRANGEMENTS
The job plan review will take place
annually, normally with the Clinical Director or Lead Clinician for Paediatric
Haematology and Oncology. The annual job
plan review may result in a revised job plan.
There may be an interim review of the job plan where duties,
responsibilities, accountability arrangements or objectives have changed or
need to change significantly within the area.
