INFORMATION
ABOUT THE DEPARTMENT
The
successful applicant will join a multidisciplinary team involved in running a
regional Paediatric Gastroenterology and Nutrition service and provide tertiary
care to North and West Yorkshire.
The
department provides expertise in the management of Inflammatory Bowel disease
(IBD) (over 300 patients), intestinal failure (IF) (being one of the first
established IF centres in the country, looking after home PN patients and
patients started on the newly NICE approved drug Teduglutide), enteral tube fed
patients (around 2000 patients), chronic constipation and dysmotility,
functional GI disorders, eosinophilic GI disorders and GI problems in children
with neurodisability. We provide onsite GI consultant assessments for a broad
range of paediatric subspecialties (Hepatology, Nephrology, Cardiology,
Neonatology, Paediatric Surgery, Oncology,
PICU etc.).
The ward has 16 beds shared between GI and general
paediatrics. There are subspecialty
clinics in inflammatory bowel disease, intestinal failure, coeliac disease,
dysmotility, general gastroenterology and transition clinics for IBD and
IF.
Main duties of the job
The
post holder will be involved in the day-to-day management of inpatients, review
of day case patients and attend outpatients clinics. They will have
responsibilities along with the other junior doctors in organising the weekly
multidisciplinary meetings and present cases.
There will be opportunities to further their training in practical
procedures such as endoscopy and colonoscopy. The weekly ward timetable
includes close supervision by consultants and several opportunities for
clinical teaching. The post-holder would
be expected to participate in medical audit and research projects.
The
post holder will be expected to do on calls in general paediatrics or
specialities, so around 60-65% of the time will be within the Paediatric
Gastroenterology and Nutrition speciality.
LEVELS
OF RESPONSIBILITY
The
post holder will be always under consultant supervision.
TEACHING
AND RESEARCH/STUDY AND TRAINING
There
will be formal teaching (once weekly within the department by MDT members) and
attendance at post-graduate educational meetings is encouraged.
There
will be access to the internet for literature searches at ward level.
Extensive
Research facilities exist at the Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust and
research will be actively encouraged within the department and in conjunction
with other departments of the hospital where there is an unusually wide range
of research activity. There will be
opportunities to take part in multicentre research projects.

2. OBJECTIVES OF THE POST

a part of these exciting and unique roles, successful post holder will have
following clinical responsibilities
Paediatric

post holder will be involved in the day-to-day management of inpatients, review
of day case patients and attend outpatients clinics. They will have
responsibilities along with the other junior doctors in organising the weekly
multidisciplinary meetings and present cases.
There will be opportunities to further their training in practical
procedures such as endoscopy and colonoscopy. The weekly ward timetable includes
close supervision by consultants and several opportunities for clinical
teaching. The post-holder would be
expected to participate in medical audit and research projects.

3. REQUIREMENTS OF THE POST
3.1 General Training and Qualifications
Duration 12 months
This
post is aimed for trainees that want to come into the speciality for 12 months
before applying for GRID training in Paediatric Gastroenterology and Nutrition
or to use it to gain SPIN competencies.
There
is the possibility for OOP position to be pre-approved as part of the GRID
training program if the candidate is in the adequate year of training and
fulfil the criteria to apply for GRID.
The
applicant should have MBBCh and MRCPCH or equivalent.
3.2 Experience
The
successful applicant should be able to work at ST4-7 level or to be able to
demonstrate equivalent level experience.
The
successful applicant will have both inpatient and outpatient duties
They
will need to be confident in the assessment of sick children
They
will need experience of working in a multidisciplinary team and have excellent verbal
and written communication skills
They
will need to have a good understanding of research methodology and be able to
supervise and support clinical assessments as part of a research study. They
will need to have, or be prepared to undertake, good clinical practice (GCP)
training.
3.3 Personal Attributes
The
appointee will have demonstrable skills in written and spoken English that are
adequate to enable effective communications about medical topics with patients

need to be enthusiastic, keen to learn and demonstrate commitment to delivering
high quality care as part of the neurosciences team
3.4 Clinical Audit
The
appointee will be expected to attend and contribute to Audit meetings,
mortality and morbidity meetings and application of agreed clinical guidelines.
5.2 Accountability
The postholder is managerially
accountable for the use of resources to the managing consultant and
professionally accountable to the Chief Medical Officer through Clinical
Directors. This may be amended in the
light of the Trusts management arrangements.
5.3 Standards of Conduct and Behaviour
You are required to work to the
standards set out by the General Medical Council in Good Medical Practice. This includes protecting patients when you
believe that a doctors or other colleagues conduct, performance or health is
a threat to them. If, after establishing
the facts, it is necessary, you must follow the Trusts procedures in this
matter and inform your Clinical Director or Medical Director in the first
instance.
Your general conduct at work should
comply with the standards set out in the Trusts document on Appraisal, in
particular the section on Core Behaviours.
5.6 Leave Arrangements
All leave should be applied for in
accordance with the Trusts Leave Policy, normally giving six weeks notice of
any leave, other than in exceptional circumstances.
5.7 Training
During the course of your
employment, you agree to undergo whatever training the Trust deems necessary. This may include, but is not limited to,
induction training, professional development and safe working practices. Funding of such training will be in
accordance with the Trusts Staff Development Policy.
5.8 Continuing Medical Education
The Trust fully supports the
requirement for CME by the relevant Royal College and acknowledges that it is
an essential component of a specialty doctors professional activities that
will be reviewed during the appraisal process and revalidation. Time and financial support for these
