Job summary

Applicants are invited for Senior Clinical Fellow (ST3+ equivalent) in Obstetrics and Gynaecology in Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust. This is an exciting opportunity to work in a friendly, dynamic, large, teaching acute hospital trust. Up to two posts are available. Posts are available now and for 6 months fixed term with a possibility of extension.

The post holder will work at a level equivalent to that of a ST3+ trainee. Applicants must have completed Foundation competencies either as part of the UK Foundation programme or demonstrate equivalent training. Applicants should have experience at working at a ST3+ level for a minimum of 6 months ideally within the UK. Basic Life Support training is essential.

Candidates will require current and valid GMC registration.

Main duties of the job

The above post is suitable for doctors wishing to gain clinical experience at a ST3+ level in Obstetrics and Gynaecology. The post offers the successful candidate a wide range of experience in all areas of the specialty. Whilst this post is not recognised for training, the appointee will be supported by a Clinical Supervisor to meet their career and educational goals.

There will be opportunities to develop special interests in one of the following areas:

-Endometriosis service

-Gynaecology postgraduate training including simulation

-Maternal Medicine

-Placenta accreta spectrum service

-Ultrasound

-Vulval

The post holder will also be encouraged to take part in departmental teaching and quality improvement work.

BACKGROUND TO THE POST

An exciting opportunity has arisen for an enthusiastic doctor to join the current Obstetrics and Gynaecology team as a clinical fellow at Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust. The service is delivered through four sites: St James University Hospital (SJUH), Leeds General Infirmary (LGI), Wharfdale General Hospital and Seacroft Hospital.

This is a non-training post, however, it allows the post holder, including applicants who already hold CCT, to gain experience that will help to secure future posts.

Almost all the sub-specialities in Obstetrics and Gynaecology are provided for at our centre.

DUTIES OF THE POST

Clinical duties

The post holder will contribute to the Obstetrics and Gynaecology inpatient and outpatient services as well as being part of the second on call rota with an on all frequency of 1 in 9. The post holder will predominantly work at the SJUH and LGI sites. Duties will involve but will not be limited to working on the labour ward, reviewing obstetric and gynaecology (including early pregnancy) emergencies and looking after antenatal, postnatal and gynaecology inpatients as well as attending antenatal and gynaecology clinics. There will be opportunities to develop special interests in one of the following areas:

-Endometriosis service

-Gynaecology postgraduate training including simulation

-Maternal Medicine

-Placenta accreta spectrum service

-Ultrasound

-Vulval

Teaching

The post holder will be encouraged to undertake audit, and to partake in undergraduate and peer-led postgraduate teaching as required.

There is a well-developed departmental postgraduate programme that includes educational meetings and monthly quality perinatal morbidity and mortality, audit and human factors teaching that the successful applicant will be expected to take an active part in.

THE OBSTETRICS & GYNAECOLOGY DEPARTMENT

The gynaecology service is predominantly based at St James University Hospital (Chancellor Wing) and includes general, urogynaecological, recurrent miscarriage, endometrial ablation, fertility control, complex contraception, menopause (based at a nearby GP practice), perineal and ambulatory gynaecology clinics such as hysteroscopy (including outpatient resection), vulval and colposcopy. Gynaecology theatres and the gynaecology acute treatment unit which includes an ultrasound scan service and outpatient acute gynaecological procedures, are also located here. Some elective gynaecology work including clinics, day case and overnight theatre and hysteroscopy also takes place at Wharfdale hospital.

The fertility service is based at Seacroft Hospital.

The maternity service is based at St James University Hospital (approximately 4,500 deliveries per year) and Leeds General Infirmary (approximately 5,200 deliveries per year). Each site has an antenatal day care unit, tertiary level fetal medicine unit, fetal assessment unit, obstetric ultrasound department and maternity assessment centre. Antenatal clinics include general high risk clinics as well as specialist ones including cardiac, diabetes, substance misuse, endocrine, epilepsy, teenage pregnancy, prematurity, obstetric haematology, placenta accrete spectrum and rheumatology clinic.
