This
is a 10 PA appointment for a Specialty Dentist in Paediatric Dentistry. This is
a substantive post and is available immediately.
We
are looking to employ an enthusiastic person as a Specialty dentist in Paediatric
Dentistry. This post will deliver 10PAs
supporting the Paediatric Dentistry Team. The post-holder will provide
specialised dental care to patients within LDI as directed and supported by the
consultant and specialist team. There will be opportunities to contribute to
the development of the service at LDI.
The
post will be based at the Leeds Dental Institute, but may involve some travel
to other LTHT sites.
Applicants
should have established skills in Paediatric Dentistry. Completion of specialty
training and on the GDC specialist list for paediatric dentistry is
desirable. A commitment to, and
experience of undergraduate teaching, and a research interest, are also
desirable.

Main duties of the job
This
substantive position has become available to increase the capacity within the
Leeds Dental Institute to meet the current demands on our Paediatric Dentistry
services. The Leeds Dental Institute is part of the Leeds Teaching Hospitals
NHS Trust and is seeking to recruit an enthusiastic and appropriately trained
specialty dentist (SD) to this post. The service is currently under review with
regard to the longer term staffing needs of the department.
The
key objectives of this post is to support the Specialist service in Paediatric
Dentistry based at Leeds Dental Institute to enable local and national waiting
time targets to be met. This is
particularly focused on the need to have sufficient capacity to ensure patients
in are seen in a timely manner.

time or flexible basis) since first obtaining registration including adequate
hospital experience in the field of childrens dentistry.

provision of paediatric dentistry within the secondary care system.
It is desirable (but not essential)
for applicants to have completed Specialist training in Paediatric Dentistry or

Leeds
Dental Institute (LDI)
The
Dental Institute, established on 1 April 1992, integrated the Dental Hospital
at Leeds and the University of Leeds, School of Dentistry.
The
Dental Hospital is situated on the ground floor of the Worsley Medical and
Dental building which also accommodates the Dental School, the Medical School
and the University of Leeds Health Sciences Library. It is situated on the southern side of the
University campus half a mile from the city centre.
Since
2003, the LDI has been undertaking a period of rapid expansion and
transformation. Outreach teaching clinics have been established in Bradford,
Leeds and Hull. An ambitious
refurbishment of the main LDI clinical areas was completed in 2012. Training of
the dental team includes not only Undergraduate and Postgraduate Dental
programmes, but also education for Dental Nurses, Dental technicians, Dental
hygienists and therapists offering vital team working experience.

3. REQUIREMENTS OF THE POST
3.1 General Training and Qualifications

3.3 Personal Attributes
All
applicants to have demonstrable skills in written and spoken English adequate
to enable effective communication about medical/dental topics with patients and
colleagues demonstrated by one of the following:
That applicants have undertaken
undergraduate medical/dental training in English;
or
have achieved the following scores in the
academic International English Language Testing System (IELTS) in a single
sitting within 24 months at time of application Overall 7, Speaking 7,
Reading 7, and Writing 7.
If
applicants believe they have adequate communication skills but do not fit into
one of these examples they must provide supporting evidence.
He/She
will have an understanding of current NHS management and Trusts and be aware of
the responsibilities that a specialty doctor post brings.
3.4 Clinical Audit
The
SD will be required to participate in the clinical audit of departmental work
and may work with other members of the dental team, under Consultant
supervision. It is expected that they will complete audit projects and complete
the audit cycle during the post, and for this to be included in allocated time
in the individuals job plan as a supporting programmed activity (or part of
one). It would be expected that the time
allocated for this would include attendance at the relevant departmental audit
meeting(s) and that such attendance would be recorded (in accordance with the
Trusts clinical audit policy).
In
the discharge of these responsibilities the appointee will be expected to
maintain and update his/her skills and knowledge through appropriate continuing
medical/dental education.
4. TEACHING
The
SD may contribute to the teaching of dental under graduates, hygiene and
therapy students, as the need arises.
They
will be required to contribute regularly to the Departmental Seminars and
Study/Journal Club.
5.2 Accountability
The postholder is managerially
accountable for the use of resources to the managing consultant and
professionally accountable to the Chief Medical Officer through Clinical
Directors. This may be amended in the
light of the Trusts management arrangements.
5.3 Standards of Conduct and Behaviour
You are required to work to the
standards set out by the General Medical Council in Good Medical Practice. This includes protecting patients when you
believe that a doctors or other colleagues conduct, performance or health is
a threat to them. If, after establishing
the facts, it is necessary, you must follow the Trusts procedures in this
matter and inform your Clinical Director or Medical Director in the first
instance.
Your general conduct at work should
comply with the standards set out in the Trusts document on Appraisal, in
particular the section on Core Behaviours.
5.4 Job Planning
It
is a contractual requirement that the specialty doctor undergoes an annual job
plan. Progression through pay thresholds will be dependant on achieving the
criteria as set out in the terms and conditions of service for Specialty
Doctors - England 2008.
5.5 Appraisal
Appraisal
will be a contractual requirement for all medical & dental staff and the
Trust attaches considerable importance to this approach intended to be of
benefit to individual staff and to achieve the highest possible standards in
the delivery of healthcare and services.
Arrangements for annual appraisal will be managed through the managing
consultant/Clinical Director.
5.6 Leave Arrangements
All leave should be applied for in
accordance with the Trusts Leave Policy, normally giving six weeks notice of
any leave, other than in exceptional circumstances.
5.7 Training
During the course of your
employment, you agree to undergo whatever training the Trust deems
necessary. This may include, but is not
limited to, induction training, professional development and safe working
practices. Funding of such training will
be in accordance with the Trusts Staff Development Policy.
5.8 Continuing Medical Education
The Trust fully supports the
requirement for CME by the relevant Royal College and acknowledges that it is an
essential component of a specialty doctors professional activities that will
be reviewed during the appraisal process and revalidation. Time and financial support for these
activities will be granted in accordance with the Trusts Leave Policy.
5.9 Secretarial Support
As
part of the resource commitments to enable the postholder to fulfil their job
plan, the appointee will have access to such secretarial assistance as is
required. This will be discussed with the appointee.
5.10 Health & Safety
The
Trust has a responsibility to provide a safe working environment for all
