Job summary

Applications are warmly invited for a locum consultant paediatric oncologist in Leeds Childrens Hospital. This is a replacement 6 PA post introduced to join the well-established paediatric solid tumour team in Leeds. We are also looking for a dynamic individual to lead the Late Effects service for children and teenagers up to the age of 18 year. The one year locum post is an opportunity for review and development of this essential and ever expanding service. Leeds provides a comprehensive haematology and oncology service for children, teenagers and young adults, including a JACIE and HTA accredited stem cell transplant service. As a childrens hospital aligned with comprehensive adult services there are significant advantages in providing seamless transition and the benefits of collaboration with adult oncology and haematology.

The successful applicant will join our dynamic team of 5 paediatric oncologists, 2 haemato-oncologist and 3 paediatric haematologists. The service is also supported by 4 specialty doctor/fellow posts and 3 advanced nurse practitioners as well as our trainees in paediatric oncology and haematology.

The team has a strong track record in clinical trial recruitment with a clinical research facility and a large team of research nurses available to support clinical trials. There are close links with laboratory research in the Leeds Institute of Cancer and Pathology, the Leeds School of Medicine and the University of York.

Main duties of the job

OBJECTIVES OF THE POST

To provide, with consultant and multi-disciplinary colleagues in the paediatric haematology and oncology team, an emergency and elective regional service for children with cancer and malignant haematological disorders.

To lead and develop the Long Term Follow-up service for children with cancer

To share on-call responsibility with 7 other consultants in the paediatric haematology and oncology team.

To provide advice and support to the other paediatric specialists in the Childrens Hospital, and to paediatricians caring for children in other hospitals who refer to Leeds.

To participate in the multi-professional paediatric clinical governance programmes, and clinical management meetings.

To participate in education, supervision and training of junior medical staff.

To participate in the active departmental research programme and/or develop appropriate research interests that will benefit the service.

Job responsibilities

The successful applicant will join Dr Sue Picton, Dr Michael Richards, Dr Beki James, Dr Martin Elliott, Dr Bob Phillips, Dr Simone Wilkins, Dr Danielle Ingham, Dr Chris Lethaby, Dr Jacob Grinfeld, Dr Hemalatha Doss and Dr Amy Ruffle in providing tertiary paediatric oncology and haematology service for Leeds and the majority of Yorkshire.

The Leeds Paediatric Oncology and Haematology clinical team also comprises of three specialty doctors, one senior trust doctor, three advanced nurse practitioners and junior doctors on rotation: two paediatric ST 5-8/equivalent, three ST 2-3. In addition, there is a haematology trainee on rotation and a paediatric haematology trainee too.

The team is highly motivated and committed to developing excellent services for patients, and the expectations of all members of the multi-disciplinary team are high.

3. REQUIREMENTS OF THE POST

Service Delivery

General

The Trust expects consultants to deliver clinical service as agreed with commissioners and other stakeholders. This will include:

continuously improving the quality and efficiency of personal and team practice

working with other staff and teams to ensure that the various criteria for service delivery are met, such as

o achieving the best clinical outcomes within the resources available

o waiting times

o infection control standards

Consultants in LTHT are line managed by their specialty Lead Clinician working in conjunction with a Business Manager. This specialty team is then managed alongside a number of other specialties in a Clinical Service (or Support) Unit (CSU) led by a Clinical Director as the responsible person, and supported by a full time General Manager and a full time Head of Nursing.

The Clinical Director and their team report operationally to the Chief Operating Officers (COO) team consisting of the Chief Operating Officer, the Medical Director for Operations and the Nurse Director for Operations. In addition, the COO team contains five assistant directors of operations (ADOps) and a Performance Team. The ADOps are each aligned to specific CSUs to facilitate two-way interaction.

Professionally, consultants report to Dr Magnus Harrison, Chief Medical Officer and the Deputy Chief Medical Officer / Medical Director (Operations).

The Leeds Childrens Hospital has a triumvirate management team consisting of the Clinical Director Mr Colin Holton , General Manager, Mrs Suzanne Abrahams and Head of Nursing Ms Laura Whelan. The Childrens Haematology-Oncology service has a triumvirate management team of Lead Clinician, Dr Susan Picton, Matron, Ms Michelle Kite and Service Manager, Ms Ruth Kirby

The role of consultant Paediatric Oncologist with leadership of Long Term Follow-up will be expected to;

Work with the LTFU lead nurse and the admin team, in collaboration with the consultants in paediatric oncology and the adult LTFU service, to develop innovative models of care for survivors of childhood cancer.

To lead the clinical LTFU service, providing a face to face weekly clinic and MDT alongside a specialty doctor and the lead nurse

To provide a comprehensive inpatient and outpatient care, with consultant and multi-disciplinary colleagues in the paediatric haematology and oncology team, including an emergency and elective regional service for children with cancer and malignant haematological disorders.

To share on-call responsibility with 7 other consultants in the paediatric haematology and oncology team.

In order to deliver the service the appointee will have access to the necessary IT infrastructure, office space and secretarial / admin support.

The Trust has a programme of activities that are designed to help consultants improve the quality of the service they offer. This includes a range of activities shown below as examples not all activities can be undertaken every year! Consultants are expected to routinely engage in relevant activities in their specialty that are focussed on quality improvement.
