Job Title: TRUST DOCTOR IN GENITOURINARY MEDICINE
Grade: ST3+ or 4 years post registration experience
Specialty/Department: DEPARTMENT OF GENITOURINARY MEDICINE (Sexual Health & HIV)
Site and Location: Leeds Teaching Hospitals Trust & Leeds Sexual Health (LSH) service sites
INFORMATION ABOUT THE DEPARTMENT
This is a full-time/part-time locum for Trust Doctor post in Genitourinary Medicine with or without an on-call commitment. They will be replacing a vacancy at specialty registrar level in the Department and is therefore available immediately. This post is fixed term until Aug 2024 in the first instance but may subsequently be extended pending national specialty training recruitment outcome.
The Genitourinary Medicine service comprises the centralised HIV outpatient service based at Brotherton Wing Clinic, Leeds General Infirmary; and the integrated Leeds Sexual Health service whose city centre hub clinic is based at the Merrion Centre. Each department also houses offices and teaching areas.
Leeds Sexual Health (LSH) provides integrated Contraception and Sexual Health services and third-sector provision as part of a consortium between LTH, Leeds Community Healthcare Trust and Yorkshire MESMAC.
LSH provides over 60,000 contacts for sexual health and contraception care with daily mixed clinics comprising walk-in and booked appointments with self referral and triage for emergency cases. There is 6-day opening at the city centre hub including 8am-8pm access Monday-Thursday, plus further spoke sites operational around the city.
There are, in addition, over 7000 HIV appointments per year. Leeds Local Authority is the highest prevalence area in Yorkshire & Humber having exceeded HIV population prevalence of 2/1000 since 2012, and as such the department has built up a reputation as a centre of expertise for HIV/AIDS. LTH is the West Yorkshire HIV network regional centre with a local HIV cohort of 2200 including spoke clinic sites in Dewsbury and Wakefield. Most of these patients are outpatients but there is a significant in-patient workload which is managed on Ward J20 at St Jamess Hospital, led by the ID consultant team, with registrar and junior support from a combination of ID & GUM teams.
MEDICAL STAFF IN THE DEPARTMENT
The LTHT GUM consultant team: Dr Amy Evans (Lead clinician), Dr Sarah Schoeman (HIV lead), Dr Anna Hartley (Medical Co-lead, Leeds Sexual Health) Dr Harriet Wallace, Dr Janet Wilson (Research lead), Dr Emma Page (Virology), Dr Natasha Astill; HIV Consultant colleagues Dr Amy Tobin and Dr Vinu Nair & joint GUM-GIM Consultants Dr Khine Phyu and Dr Mike Ewens. Other medical staff currently comprise 4 NTNs (StRs), 1 Speciality Doctor, 1 IMT trainee,1 FY1 and 2 Innovative GP trainees.
Designated staff
Within LSH we work as an integrated team with a further 2 SRH Consultants and sessional/SAS grade Drs; plus 2 SRH StRs. There is a skilled and designated health advisor, nursing and HCA establishment with advanced nursing practice, research nurses and nurse prescribing in place.
In BWC HIV service we work with Infectious Diseases Consultants & StR/research staff. There is an HIV pharmacist, an HIV Clinical Nurse Specialist team and Health advisers who rotate through the BWC HIV outpatients and LSH to maintain continuity between HIV and SH services.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE REQUIRED
Given the oncall commitment at registrar equivalent level, the appointee must hold a basic medical qualification ie MBBS/MBChB or equivalent and MRCP or equivalent is desirable. DFSRH/ specialty diplomas +/- procedural letters of competence in contraception are desirable.
Experience
The appointee must be able to demonstrate clinical experience in the management of acute unselected medical cases. Training in the management of sexually transmitted infections and HIV will be offered during induction to the post. Gynaecology/reproductive health experience is also desirable
DUTIES OF THE POST
After induction, daily outpatient clinic sessions in GU Medicine/integrated Sexual Health and after further training in outpatient HIV management. Further clinical activities include virtual ward rounds, MDT, clinical administration, Discharge letters and GP letters/referrals and prescriptions.
Urgent clinic patients must be assessed and HIV admissions arranged and assessed. Ward working patterns are in evolution and may involve a block attachment to the J20 ward eg for 2-4 months, where 3 days are spent as part of the Infectious Diseases-led ward team including inpatient HIV care with GUM activities on 2 days per week.
The on call commitment is with fellow Specialty registrars in GU medicine & Infectious Diseases on the J20 current joint rota, which is 1 in 7 -8. You would be expected to do an evening GUM clinic 1 week in 3 until 8pm as part of your oncall banding.
LEVELS OF RESPONSIBILITY
The post-holder is responsible to the Lead clinician and an Educational supervisor will oversee their educational supervision, and the GUM and ID consultants will contribute to clinical supervision.
TEACHING AND RESEARCH/STUDY AND TRAINING
The non clinical sessions will involve audit, teaching and CPD.
It is expected that there will be involvement in the teaching of medical students and other support staff, when required. Involvement in the research activities of the GUM department study portfolio and HIV service through CLRN-supported studies is actively encouraged.

The post holder is required to be fully registered with the General Medical Council (GMC) and hold a licence to practice.
Standards of Conduct and Behaviour
You are required to work to the standards set out by the General Medical Council in Good Medical Practice. This includes protecting patients when you believe that a doctors or other colleagues conduct, performance or health is a threat to them. If, after establishing the facts, it is necessary, you must follow the Trusts procedures in this matter and inform your Clinical Director or Medical Director in the first instance.

Leave Arrangements
All leave should be applied for in accordance with the Trusts Leave Policy, normally giving six weeks notice of any leave, other than in exceptional circumstances.

The jobholder must take responsibility in agreement with his/her line manager for his/her own personal development by ensuring that Continuous Professional Development remains a priority. The jobholder will undertake all mandatory training required for the role.
