Senior Paediatric Orthopaedic Fellow

The post is full time and based primarily at the Leeds General Infirmary and is offering a 6 month Fellowship starting in August 2024

The post is an excellent opportunity for candidates to pursue a career as a consultant in paediatric orthopaedics.

The paediatric orthopaedic department is located in Leeds Childrens Hospital which is on site within Leeds General Infirmary. As well as offering a full range of paediatric services including PICU and childrens cardiac surgery. The post allows access to all the acute services within the countrys second busiest Level 1 Major Trauma Centre (over 1000 MTC admissions per year, including over 100 paediatric MTC admissions). There are eight paediatric theatres in the Childrens Hospital. The department is extremely busy seeing over 3000 referrals a year from the Yorkshire region as well as the paediatric trauma.

Main duties of the job

The successful candidate will receive advanced clinical and surgical training in all aspects of paediatric orthopaedic surgery, preparing for a consultant post. In addition, they will be expected to take part in research studies as appropriate and help with the departmental audit and database. Undergraduate and postgraduate teaching will also be required.

At present there are currently six paediatric orthopaedic consultants with expansion planned in the future. There are daily paediatric only trauma clinics (Monday to Friday) as well as other elective clinics, including subspecialty clinics such as paediatric limb reconstruction, adolescent hip, neuromuscular and baby clinic for hip and foot deformities. The regional referral base is from the whole of the Yorkshire Region, a population of approximately 3.5 million. Leeds paediatric orthopaedic consultants also provide services in 5 of the regions district general hospitals, including Calderdale/ Huddersfield, Harrogate, Bradford, Airedale and Mid Yorkshire Hospital Trust.

The Department of Trauma and Orthopaedic Surgery provides Trauma and Elective services to Leeds residents and beyond. A regional service is provided for spine and scoliosis surgery, complex and revision arthroplasty, hand surgery, paediatric surgery, foot and ankle surgery and both acute trauma and post traumatic reconstructive surgery. The regional referral base is now from the whole of the Yorkshire Region, a population of approximately 3.5 million.

The paediatric orthopaedic department is located in Leeds Childrens Hospital which is on site within Leeds General Infirmary. As well as offering a full range of paediatric services including PICU and childrens cardiac surgery it allows access to all the acute services within the countrys second busiest Level 1 Major Trauma Centre (over 1000 MTC admissions per year, including over 100 paediatric MTC admissions). Leeds paediatric orthopaedic consultants also provide services in five of the regions district general hospitals, and this hub and spoke model is being expanded.

There are three adult trauma theatres running all day seven days per week. Adult elective orthopaedic services are carried out at Chapel Allerton Hospital.

MEDICAL STAFF IN THE DEPARTMENT

Trauma and Orthopaedic department of surgery is a large unit contributing to both service delivery and academic research. There are 24 Consultants including a Professor of Trauma surgery and all main branches of Trauma and Orthopaedic Surgery are represented. The department consists of:

DUTIES OF THE POST

The paediatric orthopaedic fellow will support the paediatric orthopaedic consultants in theatre, clinics and wards. There will also be opportunity for independent working in these areas where appropriate.

Teaching and appropriate supervision of junior orthopaedic staff is to be encouraged, as well as participation in audit and research.
