The Department of Trauma and Orthopaedic Surgery provides Trauma and Elective services to Leeds residents and beyond. A regional service is provided for spine and scoliosis surgery, complex and revision arthroplasty, hand surgery, paediatric surgery, foot and ankle surgery and both acute trauma and post traumatic reconstructive surgery. The regional referral base is now from the whole of the Yorkshire Region, a population of approximately 3.5 million.

The paediatric orthopaedic department is located in Leeds Childrens Hospital which is on site within Leeds General Infirmary. As well as offering a full range of paediatric services including PICU and childrens cardiac surgery it allows access to all the acute services within the countrys second busiest Level 1 Major Trauma Centre (over 1000 MTC admissions per year, including over 100 paediatric MTC admissions). There are eight paediatric theatres in the Childrens Hospital.

The paediatric orthopaedic department is extremely busy seeing over 3000 referrals a year from the region as well as the paediatric trauma. There are currently six paediatric orthopaedic consultants. There are daily paediatric only trauma clinics (Monday to Friday) as well as other elective clinics, including subspecialty clinics such as paediatric limb reconstruction, adolescent hip, neuromuscular and baby clinic for hip and foot deformities. The paediatric spine service is carried out separately by the Spinal Department including complex scoliosis, and complex paediatric hand and upper limb neuromuscular cases are cared for by the paediatric plastic surgery department.

Leeds paediatric orthopaedic consultants also provide services in five of the regions district general hospitals, and this hub and spoke model is being expanded.

There are three adult trauma theatres running all day seven days per week. Adult elective orthopaedic services are carried out at Chapel Allerton Hospital.

MEDICAL STAFF IN THE DEPARTMENT

Trauma and Orthopaedic department of surgery is a large unit contributing to both service delivery and academic research. There are 24 Consultants including a Professor of Trauma surgery and all main branches of Trauma and Orthopaedic Surgery are represented. The department consists of:

The department is supported by Trauma co-ordinators and clinical nurse specialists, including two in paediatric orthopaedics.

DUTIES OF THE POST

The paediatric orthopaedic fellow will support the paediatric orthopaedic consultants in theatre, clinics and wards. There will also be opportunity for independent working in these areas where appropriate.

Teaching and appropriate supervision of junior orthopaedic staff is to be encouraged, as well as participation in audit and research.

TEACHING AND RESEARCH/STUDY AND TRAINING

a) Teaching

Regular undergraduate and post graduate teaching. Fortnightly teaching of the junior doctors including, StRs, CT and foundation year doctors.

b) Research

Facilities are available for clinical research and laboratory facilities can be arranged for special purposes. It is anticipated that the post holder will participate in a number of clinical research projects during this appointment. Research time may be incorporated into the job plan for these posts, subject to discussion and the individual personal development needs of the applicant.

Experience

Essential

• More than 4 years experience of Orthopaedic Surgery at HST (ST3+) level, or equivalent
• Ability to provide complete details of employment history
• Evidence that career progression is consistent with personal circumstances
• Demonstrate research and audit experience with publications in peer reviewed journals

Desirable

• Teaching hospital paediatric orthopaedics (within last 2 years)
