We
are inviting applications to fill our Clinical fellow vacancy at The Leeds
Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust in the Oral and maxillofacial Department. This
post is aimed at individuals who wish to extend their experience of
maxillofacial surgery, tailored job plans are available for those interested in
research or teaching, and if appropriately qualified, support will be given in
achieving CST competencies, and in ST3 specialty applications.
This post will last for 12 months and will commence
September 2023. Part time / job share applicants will be considered. Candidates must be eligible for registration
with the General Medical Council or General Dental Council and hold a license
to practice.

Leeds
Dental Institute (LDI)
The
Dental Institute, established on 1 April 1992, integrated the Dental Hospital
at Leeds and the University of Leeds, School of Dentistry.
The
Dental Hospital is situated on the ground floor of the Worsley Medical and
Dental building which also accommodates the Dental School, the Medical School
and the University of Leeds Health Sciences Library. It is situated on the southern side of the
University campus half a mile from the city centre.
Since
2003, the LDI has been undertaking a period of rapid expansion and
transformation. Outreach teaching clinics have been established in Bradford,
Leeds and Hull. An ambitious
refurbishment of the main LDI clinical areas was completed in 2012. Training of
the dental team includes not only Undergraduate and Postgraduate Dental
programmes, but also education for Dental Nurses, Dental technicians, Dental
hygienists and therapists offering vital team working experience.

1. BACKGROUND
This
1-year fixed term position has been created to increase the capacity within the
Leeds Dental Institute to meet the current demands of our specialist OMFS. The
Leeds Dental Institute is part of the Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust and is
seeking to recruit an enthusiastic and appropriately trained colleague (SD) to
this post for 12 months. The service is currently under review with regard to
the longer term staffing needs of the department.
2. OBJECTIVES OF THE POST
The
key objectives of this post are to support the Specialty service in OMFS in
both the acute and elective care setting based at the Leeds General and Leeds
Dental Institute. This post will be focused on addressing the acute, elective
and Out Patient services and allow capacity to ensure patients in are seen in a
timely manner.
3. REQUIREMENTS OF THE POST
3.1 General Training and Qualifications
Full
registration with the GDC and/or GMC..
3.2 Experience

Applicants shall have completed at
least 1 years full time postgraduate training (or equivalent gained on a part
time or flexible basis) since first obtaining registration including adequate
hospital experience in the field of OMFS.
Applicants shall have adequate
experience of assessment, diagnosis and treatment in both the acute and
out-patient setting and within the secondary care system.
It is desirable (but not essential)
for applicants to have completed post graduate exams where possible.
3.3 Personal Attributes
All
applicants to have demonstrable skills in written and spoken English adequate
to enable effective communication about medical/dental topics with patients and
colleagues demonstrated by one of the following:

undergraduate medical/dental training in English;
or
have achieved the following scores in the
academic International English Language Testing System (IELTS) in a single
sitting within 24 months at time of application Overall 7, Speaking 7,
Reading 7, and Writing 7.
If

one of these examples they must provide supporting evidence.
He/She
will have an understanding of current NHS management and Trusts and be aware of
the responsibilities that a specialty doctor post brings.
3.4 Clinical Audit
The
post holder will be required to participate in the clinical audit of
departmental work and may work with members of the team, under Consultant
supervision. It is expected that they will complete audit projects and complete
the audit cycle during the post, and for this to be included in allocated time
in the individuals job plan as a supporting programmed activity (or part of
one). It would be expected that the time
allocated for this would include attendance at the relevant departmental audit
meeting(s) and that such attendance would be recorded (in accordance with the
Trusts clinical audit policy).
In
the discharge of these responsibilities the appointee will be expected to
maintain and update his/her skills and knowledge through appropriate continuing
medical education.
4. TEACHING
The
post holder may contribute to the teaching of dental under graduates or medical
students as the need arises.
They
will be required to contribute regularly to the Departmental Seminars and
Study/Journal Club.
5. DUTIES OF THE POST
The Accident and Emergency
department provides a range of acute conditions which you cover out of hours.
The job is a full shift rota of 1 in 8 out of hours. There is a wealth of oral
and minor oral surgery operating that you will be exposed to at the Dental
Institute, so this job would appeal to anyone who wants to develop and further
their experience in all aspects of dental, oral and maxillofacial surgery.
There is a weekly teaching programme, regular audit and regional study days,
and great opportunities to develop core professional competencies. We encourage
research and study for postgraduate examinations. We also undertake dedicated
oral surgery teaching days for our core trainees, where they receive one to one
teaching to develop their oral surgical skills.
5.1
The post is recognised by the Royal Colleges under MFDS and MRCS regulations.
LEVELS
OF RESPONSIBILITY
This
is aimed at Dental and/or CT 2 and 3 levels and job plan review will take place
annually, normally with the managing consultant or Clinical Director. The annual job plan review may result in a
revised prospective job plan. There may
