Job summary

The Leeds Centre for Diabetes and Endocrinology is seeking to appoint a Speciality Doctor within Endocrinology. The successful candidate will be working as part of the Diabetes and Endocrinology team delivering outpatient care to people living with endocrinology conditions. The post will comprise general endocrinology clinics alongside subspecialist endocrinology clinics. The post will be 10 PA. The initial appointment will be for 6 months.

This is an exciting opportunity to contribute to the development of Leeds Endocrinology, alongside established members of the team, to progress national and local outpatient transformation objectives.

The successful candidate will join an enthusiastic and supportive endocrinology multi-disciplinary team with 5 consultant colleagues, 6 specialist registrars and a large team of Diabetes and Endocrinology specialist nurses

Main duties of the job

The post focuses on the delivery of core endocrinology. The post holder will:

* Deliver care to people living with Endocrinology conditions.

Out-patient clinics

Contribute to specialist multi-disciplinary team meetings

Applicants must be able to demonstrate a high level of clinical experience and competence in all aspects of endocrinology. Excellent communication and team working skills, a strong commitment to teaching and service development are essential.

The successful applicants should hold accreditation in Membership of the Royal College of Physicians or equivalent, and should be on the Specialist Register.

The Endocrinology service is a regional tertiary centre which provides high quality care for people living with endocrinology conditions. The endocrinology department consists of 5 consultants and 8 specialist nurses with the service currently delivering around 14,600 outpatient appointments per year with an active caseload of approximately 11,000 patients. The department provides clinical services in all the major branches of endocrinology including pituitary disorders, osteoporosis and bone disease, endocrine late effects of cancer, thyroid cancer, neuroendocrine tumours, thyroid eye disease, antenatal endocrinology, transitional endocrine (with paediatric colleagues) and lipid disorders.

The posts will be based at St Jamess University.

2. OBJECTIVES OF THE POST

2.1 To assist in the provision of multi-disciplinary out-patient services / clinics in specialist Endocrinology, ensuring we meet our objectives of a responsive, patient centred, and high quality service.

2.2 We are looking for a dynamic individual who can demonstrate a high level of experience and competence in Endocrinology.

2.3 The post holder would be expected to be fully involved with department governance, QI and audit.

2.4 To contribute to the development and modernisation of Endocrinology services with the aim of improving capacity and quality of services to both the local Leeds and regional populations.

2.5 To link with Consultant colleagues in other relevant site specialist teams across the Trust.

2.6 To promote patient and public involvement in to the services provided by the Endocrinology Department, including involvement with local and national Endocrinology patient support groups.

2.7 To contribute to research, teaching and new developments within Endocrinology. The post holder will be encouraged to facilitate and contribute to the current QI and clinical research programs on going in the department.

He/She will have an understanding of current NHS management and Trusts and be aware of the responsibilities that a specialty doctor post brings.

3.4 Clinical Audit

The appointee will be expected to contribute to Audit meetings, mortality and morbidity meetings and application of agreed clinical guidelines.

And for this to be included in allocated time in the individuals job plan as a supporting programmed activity (or part of one). It would be expected that the time allocated for this would include attendance at the relevant departmental audit meeting(s) and that such attendance would be recorded (in accordance with the Trusts clinical audit policy).

In the discharge of these responsibilities the appointee will be expected to maintain and update his/her skills and knowledge through appropriate continuing medical education.

4. TEACHING

The Trust as a Teaching hospital recognises the importance of links with the University of Leeds School of Medicine for the Undergraduate teaching and all medical staff are expected to provide an appropriate contribution to the undergraduate teaching programme.
