Job summary

The department of Infectious Diseases is seeking to appoint a Locum Consultant Physician for 6 months to join the department within Speciality and Integrated Medicine (SIM CSU)

This is a 10 PA Locum post for a Consultant in Infectious Diseases with a CCT in Infectious Diseases and Microbiology/Virology/General Internal Medicine or equivalent. This post will deliver 8.5 PAs of direct clinical care and 1.5 PAs supporting professional activity,.

We are looking for a highly motivated individual to join our clinical team who will be delivering the highest quality patient care. The successful candidate will join an enthusiastic and dedicated team of physicians in Leeds Teaching Trust who are committed to providing general medical care to our patients.

The ideal applicant for this post will be able to demonstrate the following attributes: strong knowledge and skills in infection, positive response to the challenges of service development, resilience and flexibility in the face of change, excellent interpersonal and communication skills. They will be able to work cooperatively with colleagues both at consultant level and across the multidisciplinary team.

Main duties of the job

Be responsible for care of inpatient on the Infectious Diseases ward, which is the regional inpatient centre for people living with HIV and Multi- drug resistant TB. Also for outpatient General Infectious Diseases and speciality clinics.

To support the work of the department in response to infection threats as they arise.

To work with Consultant colleagues in Microbiology to champion antimicrobial stewardship and reduction of health care associated infections and to contribute to the education and training of staff from a variety of disciplines, with regard to this.

To work with colleagues in Infectious Diseases to deliver acute cover (1 in 7 with this post) and evolve working patterns to ensure ward continuity, potentially including ward-blocks with annualised hours/ time off in lieu. This includes both out-of-hours cover in addition to post-take ward rounds during normal working hours.

To contribute to research, teaching, and new service developments.

The successful candidate will be supported to develop speciality interest areas with other departments depending on their CCT and training background, to meet the needs of the local population.

This post is a locum post for a period of 6 months

1. BACKGROUND

This is a 10 PA locum appointment for a Consultant in Infection and Travel Medicine.

This post will deliver 8.5 PAs of direct clinical care and 1.5 PAs supporting professional activity.

The post will be based at St Jamess University Hospital.

2. OBJECTIVES OF THE POST

2.1 To deliver care to patients with infectious diseases needs:

Outpatient clinics in Infectious Diseases plus opportunities in Hepatology, HIV and TB

Care of inpatients with Infectious Diseases

Contribute to Specialist Multi-disciplinary team meetings; allow leadership of Trust response to infection threats eg Covid-19, MPOX and expansion of the OPAT service, particularly with novel oral agents potential in bone & joint infections.

2.2 To link with Consultant colleagues in other relevant site specialist teams within the Trust, especially with Medical microbiology and Virology colleagues in allied Infection specialties. Involvement is welcomed in the established Infection working group which is evolving combined Infection referral pathways, joint working in OPAT and shared CG, teaching and MDT opportunities.

2.3 To work with colleagues in Infectious Diseases to deliver acute cover (1 in 6 with this post) and evolve working patterns to ensure ward continuity, potentially including ward-blocks with annualised hours/ time off in lieu. This includes both out-of-hours cover in addition to post-take ward rounds during normal working hours.

2.4 To contribute to research, teaching, and new service developments eg. rapid access ID clinics and expanded OPAT service and develop specialty interests within infectious diseases. The post holder will be encouraged to facilitate and contribute to the current clinical research programs on going in the department, including Covid-19 international trials, NIHR and HIV-treatment studies.

3. REQUIREMENTS OF THE POST

3.1 General Training and Qualifications

The appointee must hold MRCP(UK) accreditation from the Royal College of Physicians (or equivalent), and have completed higher specialist training within the UK (or equivalent).

Applicants must be on the Specialist Register or within six months of being admitted to the Register for trainees if currently in a training programme within the UK, or have references which have been authorised by the Deputy Medical Director and Clinical Director.

3.4 Clinical Audit

The appointee will be expected to contribute and, where appropriate, take the lead in the following:

Mortality and morbidity meetings;

Clinical audit programmes;

Development and application of agreed clinical guidelines.

This is to be included in allocated time in the individuals job plan as a supporting programmed activity. It would be expected that the time allocated for this would include attendance at the relevant departmental audit meeting(s) and that such attendance would be recorded (in accordance with the Trusts clinical audit policy).

In the discharge of these responsibilities the candidate will be expected to maintain and update his/her skills and knowledge through appropriate continuing medical education.

4. TEACHING

The Trust as a teaching hospital recognises the importance of links with the University of Leeds, School of Medicine for the undergraduate teaching and all Consultant and medical staff are required to provide an appropriate contribution to the undergraduate teaching programme.

The post-holder will be required to participate in the undergraduate teaching programme for the school of Medicine, University of Leeds, which is organised on a speciality or clinical area basis.

The post-holder will be required to collaborate with clinical colleagues to deliver appropriate undergraduate teaching in accordance with the Trust contract with the NHS Executive in association with the University of Leeds.

The appointee will be expected, with colleagues to also contribute to the teaching of postgraduates, including the teaching programme for SpRs in Infectious Diseases in the Local Education and Training Board.

5. JOB PLAN AND WORKING ARRANGEMENTS

The job plan review will take place annually, normally with the Clinical Director or Lead Clinician for Infectious Diseases. The annual job plan review may result in a revised job plan. There may be an interim review of the job plan where duties, responsibilities, accountability arrangements or objectives have changed or need to change significantly within the area.
