Junior Clinical Fellow in Respiratory Medicine

Job summary

We have an opportunity for a Junior Clinical Fellow (JCF) in the respiratory department in St. James University Hospital, Leeds. Respiratory department in Leeds is a large department covering 4 wards & have 16 consultants covering all aspects of respiratory medicine & tertiary referral centre for many subspecialties.The person will take part in daily ward rounds, and MDTs. They will be supervised by consultants in the respiratory department. It will also give them opportunity to take part in research in the department & QIPs.

The applicant should have experience of working as FY2 or above. Prior experience of working in respiratory medicine is preferable but not mandatory.

Main duties of the job

This post is specifically directed at anybody who is considering pursuing acute medicine or respiratory medicine as a career option or preparing for membership exams. The JCF will be primarily posted on one of the respiratory wards, and will have on-call shifts in our state of the art 16 bedded RSU. This unit is a high dependency ward for respiratory patients needing interventions like non-invasive ventilation, high flow oxygen, weaning from tracheostomy ventilation, setting up home ventilation, etc. This provides an excellent opportunity to gain experience of managing patients presenting with acute respiratory failure, e.g. COPD, obesity hypoventilation, neuromuscular conditions, pneumonia, PEs, to mention a few.

There will be opportunity to attend respiratory clinics.

They can also be involved in the junior doctor training programme.

The post holder will undertake ward duties, supporting in patient care on the Respiratory in-patient bed base. There will be opportunities to expand training in Respiratory specific skills as well as Respiratory clinics. It is intended that the duties of the posts will be tailored to the individuals needs, taking into consideration the post holders prior experience, around the service elements of the role.

There is on-call commitment.

LEVELS OF RESPONSIBILITY

This will depend upon prior experience and can be discussed. It is expected that the levels of responsibility will be that of LST (above FY and below HST) and the successful candidate will receive supervision from a named consultant with responsibility to develop the individuals training e-portfolio or equivalent.

As the post is for duration of one year, it is expected that the successful applicant would be able to establish themselves in the team and evolve the role. Working alongside rotational posts (LST) the post holder may well develop increasing levels of responsibility.

TEACHING AND RESEARCH/STUDY AND TRAINING

It is expected that the successful applicant will be able to access opportunities to attend weekly teaching and monthly educational departmental meetings. They will be able to join weekly teaching programme.

An expanding research and clinical trials programme is in place, in which the successful candidate will be able to participate fully, with protected time for research and audit in the timetable.

Depending on the candidates level of experience and needs, training opportunities can be tailored.

The post is fixed term (one year) to cover a period of staff reconfiguration created by changes to the internal medicine training programme (IMT).
