LOCUM CONSULTANT NEPHROLOGIST
This post is for a period of 6 months,
1.BACKGROUND

Post Description
The Renal service in Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust (LTHT) is seeking to appoint a consultant in renal medicine.This will be a new post, and is full time based on a 10PA contract.The successful applicant will be employed by LTHT, and will work alongside existing consultants and contribute to the running of the renal service.
The renal service is based at St Jamess University Hospital, and provides high quality care for the population of Leeds and the surrounding area and is the regional center for renal transplantation.Although the main renal unit is within the St Jamess University Hospital site; the renal service also has an outreach service providing nephrological review and dialysis support to inpatients at the Leeds General Infirmary.
The main renal unit at St Jamess University Hospital has 42 inpatient beds on two wards, which provide inpatient care for nephrology, dialysis and renal transplant patients. These posts do make a contribution to General (Internal) Medicine.
There is a 26 station outpatient dialysis unit, a 5 station inpatient dialysis unit, and an outpatient peritoneal dialysis unit on the St Jamess Hospital site.The haemodialysis service also has a 32 station haemodialysis unit at Seacroft hospital site in Leeds, and satellite dialysis units in Halifax, Huddersfield, Dewsbury, Pontefract and Beeston.
The renal unit provides support for approximately 590 patients receiving haemodialysis, 90 receiving peritoneal dialysis and 1200 renal transplant patients.In the past two years over 350 acute renal transplants were performed.
The post holder will be responsible for the supervision of a cohort of patients who dialyse at the haemodialysis unit at Seacroft Hospital, and will undertake outpatient nephrology clinics and low clearance clinics in Leeds.They will also participate in the renal on call rota.

There is one non-consultant career grade staff doctor working in the renal unit who provides support to consultant staff to deliver clinical care within outpatient clinics and the haemodialysis service.There are 8 ST, 3 speciality doctors, 7 IMT and 2 FY1 doctors, and 3 advanced care practitioners working within the renal unit in Leeds who will be available to support the appointee.The out of hours cover for the renal unit is provided by the renal specific trainees.
2.OBJECTIVES OF THE POST
2.1To assist with the management of the increasing workload in renal medicine across Leeds and surrounding areas, and to provide, with consultant colleagues, a service to Leeds Teaching Hospitals Trust, with responsibility for the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of renal disease.
2.2To provide a complementary or enhancing special interest to those of the other Consultant Nephrologists in Leeds.
2.3To work with colleagues to devise ways to benefit renal services through the closer integration of the Leeds renal service with primary care.
2.4To share responsibility (with eight other consultant nephrologists) for the care of the Trusts chronic haemodialysis patients, with specific responsibility for supervising the care of patients who dialyse at the satellite units in Pontefract and at Seacroft
2.5To share with consultant colleagues responsibility for the staffing of specific renal outpatient clinics as per renal consultant team job plan.
2.6To contribute to the care of patients following renal transplantation
2.7To share out-of-hours clinical responsibilities with colleagues by participating in the renal consultant on call rota (1:14 weekdays, 1:26 weekends for renal on call (24 hours)
2.8To participate in the clinical supervision of all postgraduate trainees within the department.
2.9To contribute to undergraduate and postgraduate teaching within the Trust.
2.10To develop appropriate research interests that will benefit the clinical service provided.
2.11To demonstrate a willingness to undertake additional professional responsibilities at local, regional and national levels.
3.REQUIREMENTS OF THE POST
3.1Service Delivery
General
The Trust expects consultants to deliver clinical service as agreed with commissioners and other stakeholders.This will include:

continuously improving the quality and efficiency of personal and team practice
working with other staff and teams to ensure that the various criteria for service delivery are met, such as
oachieving the best clinical outcomes within the resources available

oinfection control standards
Consultants in LTHT are line managed by their specialty Lead Clinician working in conjunction with a Business Manager.This specialty team is then managed alongside a number of other specialties in a Clinical Service (or Support) Unit (CSU) led by a Clinical Director as the responsible person and supported by a full time General Manager and a full time Head of Nursing.
The Clinical Director and their team report operationally to the Chief Operating Officer (COO). The Clinical Director will work closely with the Chief Operating Officers team which includes two Medical Directors for Operations, Nurse Directors for Operations, Deputy Chief Operating Officer, Assistant Directors of Operations (ADOs) and a Performance Team, with each ADO aligned to specific CSUs.

Service specific
Consultant nephrologists will be expected to work with consultant colleagues and the wider renal MDT to deliver inpatient and outpatient care for patients under the care of the renal service.This will include the supervision of haemodialysis patients dialysing at Seacroft and Beeston satellite units as per NHSE service specification.It is envisaged that the post holders will run general nephrology clinics alongside the existing consultants, however working as an independent practitioner with their own patient lists. In addition to general nephrology patients, the post holder will contribute to joint clinics for review of pre-dialysis patients and patients who have opted for conservative care of their end stage renal disease.
