Womens CSU

LOCUM CONSULTANT OBSTETRICAN AND GYNAECOLOGIST

This post is a locum post for a period of 6 months with a possibility of extension to 12 months.

BACKGROUND

This is a 10 PA locum appointment for a Consultant Obstetrician and Gynaecologist.

This post will deliver 10 PAs supporting the Obstetric and Gynaecology team across Leeds General Infirmary and St James University Hospital.

This is a new post and has been developed to address an increase in demand for the service. Specifically this post requires applicants with enhanced surgical and laparoscopic skills.

Womens CSU

Womens Clinical Service Unit in Leeds provides comprehensive secondary care for the local population and enjoys a position as a regional centre for all subspecialties. There are 33 Consultants within the Womens Clinical Service Unit.

Gynaecology Department

The team comprises of 14 consultants, including this post, of which 10 contribute to the gynaecology on call rota. There is also a large team of consultant nurse specialists who deliver clinical expertise in sub-specialty areas of Urogynaecology, Colposcopy, Hysteroscopy, Endometriosis and Reproductive Medicine. The CSU provides a full secondary and tertiary service for Leeds, Yorkshire and significant parts of the North of England.

In 2015 a new development housing the Leeds Centre for Womens Health comprising the gynaecology acute treatment unit (GATU) which incorporates early pregnancy care, and ward J24 at St Jamess which was the dedicated gynaecology ward. This has been the fulcrum for modernising pathways, increasing productivity and reducing length of stay.

In 2017 our outpatient facility was upgraded, located close to the inpatient unit, and enabling the team to undertake more procedures in the outpatient setting and with the necessary facilities for assessment, diagnosis and treatment, often on the same day. This department has recently incorporated gynaecology ultrasound scanning facilities to streamline the pathway. This hub is the home of the gynaecology nurse specialists, who already deliver a higher volume of nurse-led diagnosis and treatment clinics than any other centre nationally.

We work closely with community gynaecology services and launched the Integrated Gynaecology Service in partnership Leeds Community Healthcare NHS Trust in 2018, this has been very successful and enabled both teams to care for patients in the right setting.

Obstetric Departments

Womens Clinical Service Unit (CSU) in Leeds provides comprehensive secondary care for the local population and enjoys a position as a regional centre for all subspecialties. There are 20 obstetric Consultants within the Womens Clinical Service Unit.

The St Jamess Maternity Unit, which is located in Gledhow Wing, deals with approximately 4,700 deliveries per year. The Leeds General Infirmary Maternity Unit, located within Clarendon Wing, has around 4,900 deliveries per annum. Each Unit has a General Antenatal Outpatient Department, an Antenatal Day Unit, Maternity Assessment Unit, Fetal Assessment Unit and Obstetric Ultrasound Department. Consultant presence is currently around 85 hours per week at each unit. Fetal Medicine is based at LGI.

Antenatal Outpatients

In addition to high risk antenatal clinics, there are a variety of specialist clinics run in conjunction with the relevant Physicians on either the St Jamess or LGI site. These include a Cardiac Clinic, Renal Clinic, Diabetic Clinic, Substance Abuse Clinic, Endocrine Clinic (thyroid, adrenal and pituitary), Teenage Pregnancy Clinic, Preterm Labour Clinic, Obstetric Haematology Clinic and a Rheumatology clinic.

OBJECTIVES OF THE POST

2.1 To deliver care to patients in:

Outpatient gynaecology clinics

Operating Theatres - enhanced and laparoscopic surgical skills required

Supervision of patients

Care of in-patients on an acute Gynaecology

Contribute to Specialist Multi-disciplinary team meetings

Ambulatory obstetric areas, including postnatal ward review.

Obstetric Labour Ward and Obstetric on calls

2.2 To link with Consultant colleagues in other relevant site specialist teams within LTHT and across the West Yorkshire region.

2.3 To work with colleagues in Obstetrics to deliver acute on call (currently 1 in 10) for Obstetrics. This includes both out-of-hours cover in addition to acute ward rounds during normal working hours and cover the gynaecology acute treatment unit (GATU) during hot weeks (1 in 9).

2.4 To link with Consultant colleagues in other relevant site specialist teams within the Clinical Service Unit and across Leeds Teaching Hospital

2.5 To contribute to research, teaching and new developments within the CSU. The post holder will be encouraged to facilitate and contribute to the current clinical research programs on going in the department.

2.6 We recognise that alongside the need to provide excellent routine care, we are a unit that is in continuous improvement and development. There will be opportunity to participate in exciting new service developments, such as implementing and extending ambulatory care pathways for the unit. There is scope within each post to develop key areas of practice within the specialty, according to service requirements, depending on the individuals special interests and skills and a successful candidate would be encouraged and supported to do so.

This is a 10 PA locum appointment for a Consultant Obstetrician and Gynaecologist. The post will be based at St Jamess University Hospital and Leeds general Infirmary. Some sessions may be required at Wharfedale or Seacroft Hospitals
