Job summary

Applications are invited to apply for a Trust Doctor (ST1/2) post in Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery at Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust. There are 4 posts, from August 2023, with one available from May 2023.

The post is available for 6 months initially with potential for extension. The post is full time with on calls, and primarily based at Leeds General Infirmary. The post is ideal for trainees committed to plastic surgery wishes to gain further experience prior to core/higher surgical training.

The department provides a wide range of specialist plastic and reconstructive surgery and has an international reputation for both innovation and the delivery of high quality patient care. There is a comprehensive hand and upper limb service (including congenital hand, adult hand and brachial plexus surgery), head and neck surgery, craniofacial surgery, sarcoma, breast reconstruction, skin cancer & lower limb reconstruction. In addition all consultants participate in the management of general plastic surgery acute and elective cases.

Main duties of the job

The timetable of commitments for junior trainees include operating sessions, Dressing Clinic sessions, sessions covering routine ward duties and pre-admission clinics, and local anaesthetic list, and out-patient session. The routine work includes care of acute and elective patients, attendance at theatre lists and out-patient clinics.

The level of responsibility depend upon prior experience and can be discussed. It is expected that the levels of responsibility will be that of ST1 or above, and the successful candidate will receive supervision from a named consultant with responsibility to develop the individuals e-portfolio or equivalent.

About us

The Plastic Surgery Unit has 18 adult beds, separate paediatric beds and beds on a dedicated High Dependency Unit. A daily dressing clinic with a separate Sister and staff also operates within the Unit. There are 21 general anaesthetic and 7 local anaesthetic lists per week.

Both Leeds hospitals have busy Accident and Emergency Departments and general Plastic Surgery emergencies are referred to the Unit. The Unit takes acute hand emergencies on a rota with Orthopaedics and many trauma cases are treated as combined procedures with the Orthopaedic Surgeons.

Outside of the main Unit at Leeds General Infirmary, Plastic Surgery out-patient clinics are held at St. Jamess University Hospital, which the Specialist Registrar will attend when working for different firms. In addition, combined clinics with appropriate departments are held in head and neck oncology, rheumatology, sarcoma, breast, melanoma, non melanoma skin cancer.

The Leeds Teaching Hospitals Trust provide comprehensive health care to a population of 750,000. A number of Regional and Sub-Regional Services are also provided from hospitals within the area. There are two major teaching hospitals in Leeds, the General Infirmary at Leeds and St. James's University Hospital. Approximately 100 clinical students enter each of the two teaching hospitals each year.

MEDICAL STAFF IN THE DEPARTMENT

This is a large teaching hospital which over recent years has been largely rebuilt. There are 1,112 beds with facilities for most major acute specialities. There are University Departments of Anaesthesia, Medicine, Surgery, Neurosurgery, Cardiac Surgery, Forensic Medicine, Orthopaedics, Paediatrics, Psychiatry and General Practice. The hospital provides clinical teaching for half the University of Leeds medical students.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE REQUIRED

Qualifications : MB ChB or equivalent ALS

Experience: 4 months UK experience in a surgical speciality

The successful applicant will also have to perform duties in occasional emergencies and unforeseen circumstances at the request of the appropriate Consultant, in consultation, when practicable with his colleagues both senior and junior. It has been agreed between the profession and the Department of Health & Social Security that while juniors accept that they will perform such duties, the Secretary of State stresses that additional commitments arising under this sub-section are exceptional and in particular that juniors should not be required to undertake work of this kind for prolonged periods or on a regular basis.
