Main duties of the job

The successful applicant should be able to work at ST4-7 level or to be able to demonstrate equivalent level experience.

The successful applicant will have both inpatient and outpatient duties

They will need to be confident in the assessment of sick children

They will need experience of working in a multidisciplinary team and have excellent verbal and written communication skills

They will need to have a good understanding of research methodology and be able to supervise and support clinical assessments as part of a research study. They will need to have, or be prepared to undertake, good clinical practice (GCP) training.

About us

The Leeds Childrens Hospital has an annual budget of £103 million, inpatient bed base of 286 beds, and delivers 102,000 outpatient appointments and 20,000 inpatient and day case episodes. The majority of which is on the Leeds General Infirmary site, however there is a Neonatal unit based on the St James Hospital site. The Leeds Childrens Hospital employs a total of 116 consultants providing general, specialist and supra-regional childrens medical and surgical services. Inpatient, day case and outpatient services are mainly provided at the LGI.

Leeds Children's Hospital is offering Out Of Programme Pause (OOPP) positions in 7 sub-speciality areas. OOPP positions allow trainees to take a step out of formal training for one year and have any competencies gained whilst out of training assessed upon their return.

Leeds Childrens Hospital is offering 7 fantastic opportunities, starting in September 2023.

Paediatric allergy Leeds Paediatric Allergy service provides a secondary and tertiary allergy service to children of Leeds and Yorkshire. The large multidisciplinary team includes paediatric allergy consultants, allergy nurses, allergy dietitians and clinical psychologist. The service supports children with IgE and non-IgE mediated food allergy, allergic asthma, allergic rhinitis, atopic dermatitis, drug allergy, venom allergy, chronic spontaneous urticaria and complex multisystem allergic disease. As a part of this exciting and unique role, successful post holder will experience allergy clinics, training in performing and interpretation of diagnostic tests including skin prick testing, intradermal testing, specific IgE blood testing, component resolved diagnostics, supervision of day-case provocation challenges and immunotherapy, attendance at departmental study days, as well as BSACI and BPAIIG study days

Paediatric undergraduate education

This is an exciting opportunity for an enthusiastic paediatric trainee (ST4 or above) to develop their skills and experience in undergraduate medical education and educational leadership, through a focus on undergraduate paediatric education

The undergraduate paediatric course or ICU (integrated course unit) is set in Year 4 of the five year MBChB programme at the University of Leeds. There are approximately 300 students per year that are divided in to 5 ICU groups of 60 students. Each of these ICU groups rotate into paediatrics over a 6 week period through the academic year. You would be working alongside academic and clinical teams to support the University undergraduate programme for the teaching and assessment of paediatrics and child health. This is a new role and we would look at the possibility of supporting development with a PGDip in Clinical education and an honorary lectureship.

Paediatric diabetes Leeds Childrens Hospital has one of the largest Children and Young Peoples Diabetes Services in the country and cares for over 550 patients and their families living with diabetes. The service is expanding quickly and has seen a steady increase in the numbers over the last 5 years. We receive local referrals from the surrounding areas and regional referrals from all over the country. We are at the forefront of developing and adopting innovations in clinical practice and are responsible for the development of the multi -award winning Digibete web-platform and App that is now signposted and financially supported by NHS England.

Paediatric neurology We are a busy tertiary neurosciences unit embedded within a large childrens hospital with a Paediatric Intensive Care Unit ensuring the postholder will gain experience in a wide-range of neurological disorders.

The postholder will actively contribute and attend the neuroscience meetings including: neuro-oncology; neuroradiology; histopathology, neurophysiology and neurogenetics meeting. The neuromuscular service has been recognised as one of the national centres of clinical excellence for childrens neuromuscular care in the UK since 2014. We have expanded our research portfolio and are a well-established Research Hub site outside the national research centres. As a consequence Leeds is a centre for a number of observational and interventional studies in Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy and Spinal Muscular Atrophy.

Paediatric gastroenterology Leeds Childrens Hospital provides a regional Paediatric Gastroenterology and Nutrition service and tertiary care to North and West Yorkshire. The department provides expertise in the management of Inflammatory Bowel disease (IBD) (looking after approx. 300 patients), intestinal failure (IF) (being one of the first established IF centres in the country, looking for 23 home PN patients), enteral tube fed patients (around 2000 patients), chronic constipation and dysmotility, functional GI disorders, eosinophilic GI disorders and GI problems in children with neurodisability

Paediatric immunology & infectious diseases The Paediatric Infectious Diseases service provides inpatient consultations, regional telephone advice, weekly TB clinics, fortnightly HIV clinics, weekly general infection clinics, with input into the Childrens Hospital infection prevention and control team, and trust wide antimicrobial stewardship group. We have a clinical nurse specialist in paediatric HIV, and there is a quarterly young adult HIV clinic.

Paediatric immunology covers inpatient consults, support for children and young people post BMT in Newcastle, support and training for CYP receiving subcutaneous immunoglobulin therapy, and a monthly multispeciality primary immunodeficiency clinic, supported by adult immunology and visiting consultants from our supraregional quaternary paediatric immunology centre in Newcastle. Children with recurrent infections without strong suspicion of primary immunodeficiency are also seen in the general infection clinic. Two clinical nurse specialists support the service.

Paediatric hepatology - Leeds is an internationally recognised Paediatric Liver Centre which is one of three in the UK. This is a unique opportunity for an enthused candidate to look after and learn about the management of post liver transplant patients, neonatal cholestasis (BA), acute liver failure etc under supervision.
