CONSULTANT in Cellular Pathology x 2
These
are locum posts for a period of 6 months.
1. BACKGROUND
These
are upto 10 PA locum appointments for 2 Consultant Pathologists, with areas
to cover including Gynae Pathology, Head and neck and Non gynae cytology.
The
post will be based at St. James's University Hospital.
2. OBJECTIVES OF THE POST
2.1 To deliver care to patients with
pathology reporting
Biopsy reporting
Oncology cut up
Oncology reporting
Contribute to Specialist
Multi-disciplinary team meetings
2.2 To link with Consultant colleagues in
other relevant site specialist teams within the Bexley wing and Chancellors
wing at SJUH.
2.3 No on-call or out of hours work is
expected.
2.4 To contribute to research, teaching and
new developments within the Trust. The post holder will be encouraged to
facilitate and contribute to the current clinical research programs on going
in the department.

3. REQUIREMENTS OF THE POST
3.1 General Training and Qualifications
The appointee must hold
accreditation in the Royal College of Pathologists or equivalent, and have
completed higher specialist training (or equivalent) if currently in a
training programme within the UK.
Applicants
must be on the Specialist Register or within six months of being admitted to
the Register for trainees if currently in a training programme within the
UK, or have references which have been
authorised by the Deputy Medical Director and Clinical Director.
Applicants
must provide information regarding their status from the GMC and/or relevant
Royal College at the time of application, in order for their application to
be progressed further.
3.2 Experience
The
appointee must be able to demonstrate a high level of clinical experience and
competence in all aspects of pathology and appropriate experience in cellular
pathology. It is desirable that the candidates have experience in the conduct
of clinical trials.

3.4 Clinical Audit
The
appointee will be expected to contribute and, where appropriate, take the
lead in the following:
Mortality and morbidity meetings;
Clinical audit programmes;
Development and application of
agreed clinical guidelines.
This
is to be included in allocated time in the individuals job plan as a
supporting programmed activity. It
would be expected that the time allocated for this would include attendance
at the relevant departmental audit meeting(s) and that such attendance would
be recorded (in accordance with the Trusts clinical audit policy).
4. TEACHING
The
Trust as a teaching hospital recognises the importance of links with the
University of Leeds, School of Medicine for the undergraduate teaching and
all Consultant and medical staff are required to provide an appropriate
contribution to the undergraduate teaching programme.
The
post-holder will be required to participate in the undergraduate teaching
programme for the school of Medicine, University of Leeds, which is organised
on a speciality or clinical area basis.
The
appointee will be expected, with colleagues to also contribute to the
teaching of postgraduates, including the teaching programme for SpRs in
Pathology in the Local Education and Training Board.
5. JOB PLAN AND WORKING ARRANGEMENTS
The job plan review will take
place annually, normally with the Clinical Director or Lead Clinician for
Cellular Pathology. The annual job
plan review may result in a revised job plan.
There may be an interim review of the job plan where duties,
responsibilities, accountability arrangements or objectives have changed or
need to change significantly within the area.
5.1 Proposed Job Plan
The
post consists of a maximum of 10 PAs with 8.75PAs of direct clinical care
(DCC) and 1.25PAs of supporting professional activity (SPA).
This
job plan will fit together with colleagues job-plans with a careful rota of
clinical sessions, to ensure robust cover. For example, on a work rota the
post holder will have cut up, reporting, with cross-cover from other members
of the team.

5.2 Accountability
The
post-holder is managerially accountable for the use of resources to the Chief
Executive and professionally accountable to the Chief Medical Officer through
Clinical Directors. This may be
amended in the light of the Trusts management arrangements.
5.3 Standards of Conduct and Behaviour
He/she
will be required to work to the standards set out by the General Medical
Council in Good Medical Practice. This
includes protecting patients when you believe that a doctors or other
colleagues conduct, performance or health is a threat to them.
If,
after establishing the facts, it is necessary, you must follow the Trusts
procedures in this matter and inform your Clinical Director or Medical
Director in the first instance.
Your
general conduct at work should comply with the standards set out in the
Trusts document on Appraisal, in particular the section on Core Behaviours.
6. TERMS AND CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT
6.1 Conditions of employment are determined
by the Leeds Teaching Hospitals Trust in accordance with the Terms &
Conditions Consultants (England) 2003, as amended from time to time in the
light of national or local collective agreements.
6.2 The post-holder, as a practitioner with
continuing responsibility for the care of patients must be able to respond
promptly to emergency calls from the Hospital.
6.3 A consultant is required to reside
within a distance of 30 minutes or 10 miles by road from their principal
place of work unless an employing organisation agrees that they may reside at
a greater distance.
6.4 A consultant must be contactable by telephone.
6.5 The consultant must ensure that there
are clear and effective arrangements so that the employing organisation can
contact him or her immediately at any time during a period when he or she is
on call.
6.6 The post-holder should note, however,
that where the Trust agrees that the post-holder may live further than ten
miles from the hospital, the Trust will only reimburse travelling expenses up
to a maximum of twenty miles return, in accordance with Trust Terms and
Conditions of Service.
6.7 Assistance with relocation to the Leeds
area may be provided to the successful candidate. A copy of the Trusts Relocation Policy is
available on request.
6.8 The normal NHS requirements for
indemnity of medical and dental staff in cases of medical negligence apply.
