Trust Grade Doctor in Renal Medicine

This is a full time appointment for a 2 Trust Doctor in Renal Medicine. This post will start on the February 2022 for 6 months.

The post is based in the renal unit at St James Hospital, supporting all aspects of renal care including renal transplantation. You will be an integral part of the renal unit working as part of the large multi-professional team. You will be working as part of a 1 in 17 out of hours rota for night time duties and a 1 in 8 rota for day time on call

Main duties of the job

Applicants should have completed foundation medicine training (or equivalent). Have excellent communication and team working skills, a strong commitment to teaching and service development are essential.

The renal unit in Leeds is in St James Hospital, part of the Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust. The unit is a tertiary referral centre for patients throughout Yorkshire. All aspects of renal care are provided including acute transplantation. The renal unit in Leeds is in St James Hospital, part of the Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust. The unit is a tertiary referral centre for patients throughout Yorkshire. All aspects of renal care are provided including acute transplantation. Trainees are integrated into the workings of the unit, participating in all facets of the multi-professional teams. Specialty doctors will gain comprehensive exposure to all aspects of the renal curriculum plus specialist vascular access MDTs, young persons clinic, ADPKD clinic, obstetric clinic, vasculitis clinic and live donor work up.

Running one the largest renal transplant programs in the UK, trainees are able to gain experience of complex immunological screening processes and participate in our annual transplant consent clinic, run in collaboration with surgical colleagues.

The renal unit prides itself on providing an excellent training programme, with 100% green flags in the most recent GMC survey. A bespoke timetabling system ensures trainees gain access to all areas of the curriculum to fulfill training needs.

There is an active research programme, a well-developed audit and clinical governance system and there are opportunities for trainees to pursue areas of specialist interest within this. Out of programme opportunities are present both as research projects but also through leadership training programmes, and educational posts.

Medical students from the Leeds Medical School are attached to the unit and there are many opportunities to get involved with teaching and education.

Educational Supervision is provided my members of the consultant team, with the lead doctors for training being Dr Richard Hoefield and Dr Claire Reid.

DUTIES OF THE POST

You will be an integral part of the renal unit working as part of the large multi-professional team. You will be working as part of a 1 in 17 out of hours rota for night time duties and a 1 in 8 rota for day time on call.

Speciality Doctors are involved in the running of the inpatient ward areas. Taking referrals and queries from other health care providers, and are part of the management of the haemodialysis and peritoneal dialysis units.

You will be trained in the insertion of temporary and semi-permanent dialysis catheters will attend multlidisciplinary team meetings and have a commitment to outpatient services including specialist clinics.

LEVELS OF RESPONSIBILITY

You will be functioning at the grade of a lower speciality trainee - but this is subject to change depending on skills and current level of training. You will at times be responsible for the supervision of more junior members of the team. The consultant staff team are committed to ensuring an exceptional level of supervision and you will be given this.

TEACHING AND RESEARCH/STUDY AND TRAINING

There is a comprehensive weekly consultant led departmental education programme. You will also be entitled to attend the bi-monthly regional Northern Postgraduate Nephrology Course and will be able to apply for study leave and funding for other relevant training courses.

Medical students are an important asset to our department and are delivered regular timetabled teaching. We would be keen for the successful candidate to participate with medical student and physician associate teaching as well as mentorship.

There will also be an opportunity for a suitable candidate to apply for a post graduate certificate in medical education during the 12 month post. There is also opportunitys for the successful candidate to attend OSCE examiner training and help deliver the 5th year OSCEs at the University of Leeds

We also offer comprehensive vascular access training for central venous catheter insertion both temporary and semi-permanently dialysis line insertion under USS guidance by our dedicated consultant / ANP led line service.

Educational supervision will be provided and the post holder will be encouraged to develop a portfolio to enable to them to transition to the next stage of their career. This includes the option to participate within the departmental research programme and the requirement to contribute towards clinical governance. There is a strong track record of trainees success with abstract submission to national and international meetings.

In addition, Leeds is the largest kidney only transplant centre in the UK. There is ample opportunity to see all stages of the transplant patient journey, from workup to transplantation and post-operative care, as well as long term complications. The consultant led educational programme includes transplant related teaching by the physicians who run this part of the service. There is active kidney transplant research in the department and a suitable candidate could become involved. Renal transplant research in Leeds has a track record of successful MD/PhD candidates, and the team are actively developing the research programme.
